Suddenly weak to no WiFi connection with my iPad

  • (Swisscom Box 1)

For a few days now I’ve noticed that my iPad is no longer the same in terms of WiFi as it was a few days before.

Within a few meters on the same floor everything is fine (full 3 dashes of signal strength). If I want to go a little further away (the same floor 2 rooms away), only 2 lines are displayed. In the bedroom one floor higher (air distance approx. 7-8 m, open staircase) I can no longer get a connection at all. Going online is impossible. I also no longer have reception in the basement or garden. Previously I had a full 3 lines of signal strength in all of the places mentioned.

Has something changed at Swisscom that I didn’t notice? I’m looking forward to an answer.

    Greetings, Ryma

If you briefly turn the iPad’s WiFi off and on at a bad location, does it work normally again?

Do you still use WLAN boxes?

What kind of router do you have (Swisscom Box 1 does not exist)?:

    Yes, sorry, it’s box 2.

Please restart the router (power off / wait 10s / power on).

I did it x times. Without success.

Do you only have the problem with the iPad or also other WLN devices?

Only with iPad. I don’t use anything else for the Internet.

Has the problem only existed since the iPad was upgraded to iOS 16.x?

I currently have V15.6.1 installed. V15.7 has been made available for download.

I will let you know when the V15.7 update is completed.

Of course, also done x times. Without success.

Do you still use WLAN boxes?

I didn’t even know such a thing existed. 🙂 So none in use.

Do you already have the WiFi set to “individual” on the internet box? If not, try it.

In any case, the iPad should also work with the current version.

Let’s hope this error doesn’t exist.

      Already switched to single.

What firmware is on the IB2?

The following experiment would be ideal for isolating the error:

        - Tests on your IB2 with another WLAN device (smartphone, laptop)

        - Tests with your iPad on a different WLAN

This way you could narrow down whether the problem is with the IB2 or the iPad.

Can you arrange something like that?

Has anyone in the neighborhood installed a new WiFi or changed the channel?

I would try changing the channel manually. You should also be able to do a scan to see which channel is the most suitable, but this is not always precise since the measurement location is the router itself. Otherwise try it out.

This is all too technical for me now and I can’t do experiment after experiment all day long. Especially not because I’m not a technology junkie. I am now requesting a new box.

        Thanks for your comments.

WLAN problems are very complex and often require a lot of effort to resolve.

But yes, replacing the box is of course also an option to then confirm or rule out this as the cause of the error.

Does anyone have a phone number where I can contact support or request a box? All I see on the Swisscom website is confusion.

When I see the IB values, everything is fine. Could it be that the iPad is defective?

And forget all the nonsense about manual settings in the router. Just leave everything on automatic. The router also checks regularly whether it should change the band. You’re doing more damage than good.

I would see if you have another device (smartphone, laptop) to test whether the same problem occurs.

One more thing comes to mind. Didn’t you happen to reduce the transmission power in the WLAN settings? Then it wouldn’t be surprising if the distance decreased significantly.
