Mycloud data loss

  • Are there other Mycloud users here who are affected by the data loss?

Maybe even those who know a little more about cloud solutions than me?

My aim here is to find out how useful Mycloud is, or rather how I can best protect myself without having 20 hard drives at home…

    Thanks for your answers!

Just forget the marketing chatter and learn (perhaps a little bloodily) that from the user’s perspective, a cloud (regardless of the provider) is by definition always to be treated as an untrusted environment.

Two important derived principles follow from this:

      - never store the original files on a cloud

      - Only save files worth protecting in a cloud after local encryption (where only you really know the key) than for other unreadable data snippets

    @SeveM

I haven’t had any data loss with iCloud, OneDrive and myCloud yet, but something can always happen.

Be it by dissolving from a cloud or reducing storage.

In any case, my data is always additionally still stored at my home.

Of course, there are special cloud solutions for companies which include corresponding costs, but contain a very high guarantee for data backup.

A single backup on just one cloud or just one server or just one external hard drive is never secure. A sensible backup concept has 3 levels, at least 2 of which should also differ geographically (e.g. locally on the PC and in the NAS and externally in the cloud).

Something else to add would be:

Back up your personal data in a cloud only after local encryption has been carried out beforehand, because with every cloud you should mentally assume that your data will also potentially be accessible to others.

If this is the case, you will consider yourself very lucky that what you believe to be unauthorized people will not directly find your personal directory structures and documents in plain text, but will only find encrypted data snippets that they cannot read.

The greatest data protection risk for data within a cloud always lies with the cloud operator itself.

Depending on the job, every cloud operator always has employees who can or at least “could” read out what you have put in, or who may even be instructed to do so by the authorities.

@SeveM go back to the beginnings of Mycloud](https://community.swisscom.ch/t5/myCloud-Docsafe/bd-p/MyCloud_de/page/19) and read something there. I noticed this for example. It’s been 3 years, and apparently improved.

I didn’t notice any explicit data losses caused by Swisscom. But probably due to incorrect manipulation by users themselves. Swisscom itself provides [this statement](https://community.swisscom.ch/t5/myCloud-Docsafe/Mein-Daten-wurden-bei-der-Synchronisation-mit-Desktop-gel%C3%B6scht/m-p/500426 #M2175) off:winking:

Yes, about the incorrect manipulations by users themselves, a nice excuse when things don’t work:winking:

In this case, however, Swisscom openly admitted to me that there was a loss of data. I didn’t contribute much to it.

    Best regards

Unless the cloud operator can no longer find the data!:winking:

I have been using the “Duplicati” tool for this purpose for many years:

    https://www.duplicati.com/

It’s free because it’s open software, very proven and easy to use, as the automation of the encrypted PC backups can also be parameterized directly with it.

Once set up correctly, e.g. as a daily backup, it’s a no-brainer where you just have to periodically check whether the regular batches are still running in the background and then do a test restore of some of the backup data about every 3 months to make sure that you can actually restore your self-encrypted data from the cloud locally.

For extended backgrounds and alternative tools, see also here:

    Hello everyone!

I would like to point out to you that Swisscom has lost customer data!

I have just been informed by phone that data from myCloud was lost during storage optimization and cannot be recovered! What frustration!! According to Swisscom, other customers are affected. I hope there aren’t too many!:tiresome:

    See the slogan of myCloud:

“Save your most precious moments where they are safest: at home. In Switzerland.”

You can easily check whether you are affected:

Log in, click on your initials at the top right -> Settings

If it says: “Check: status of your data” you are unfortunately also affected. There you can check under “View status” which data has been lost.

If there’s nothing there, you’re in luck!

    Hello everyone

After the data loss of myCloud, I will now also create a local backup of myCloud. Now I noticed that you can only synchronize the “Files” area on the PC. How do you create a regular backup of the photo area? All of my photos from my iPhone are uploaded directly.

    Thank you for your support.

    Show original language (German)

    Hello novice

Unfortunately you can’t (or I don’t know how) you can only upload your photos under “Files” and then copy the folder to Photos! Then you essentially have twice the data and can create your local backup from the files.

I think this is the simplest option…

I just read in Tagi that MyCoud has apparently irretrievably destroyed the data of hundreds of customers.

While that fact in and of itself doesn’t surprise me, I’m surprised that there doesn’t seem to be a thread about it here yet. Or have I missed something?

    Show original language (German)

So the Tagi article can’t have been particularly well researched, because offering 50 francs in compensation would have an even worse effect on the customer than no compensation at all…

If you only rely on the cloud, it’s somehow your own fault.

Personally, I save everything in the Swisscom myCloud and on the PC, as well as on an external hard drive.

A different cloud is also controlled on the tablet and phone, so the data is doubled there too.

    Show original language (German)

It should be normal to additionally back up your data, unfortunately this is not the case for the most part, even with your own computers there are many users who ignore this and are then surprised when data, for example. are destroyed due to a defective hard disk.

It wouldn’t be bad if Swisscom also pointed out in the link below that what you can’t find there is liability for data loss in the myCloud, or it’s very well hidden.
