Declutter your smartphone and create more storage
Even with a large phone memory, it still fills up eventually. Clear out your smartphone memory from time to time to create more space.
The low memory message sends most of us into panic. And if you can’t take a photo at the perfect moment, it’s all the more annoying. So check beforehand how much space you have left – and take action if you need to.
1. Check your storage space
- For iPhones: under Settings > General > iPhone Storage
- For Android devices: under Settings > Storage > Internal storage
This lets you see the apps that use most memory. If there are apps you never use, you can delete or deactivate them.
2. Get organised
A messy smartphone might be less noticeable than a chaotic living room, but a digital clean-up is still essential. Regularly upload your photos and videos to your computer, an external memory or to a cloud such as myCloud, Apple Photos or Google Photos. As well as saving valuable storage space, it also gives you a better overview.
You can also tidy up streaming apps by removing podcasts you have heard or by unfollowing artists or playlists you no longer use. There is also an option to archive old chats on messenger services.
3. Delete background data
The cache contains stored data from websites, videos or apps. It has some benefits: for applications you use frequently, it saves your smartphone downloading existing data a second time and saves mobile data on the move. However, you should still empty the cache from time to time to remove unnecessary data and save a lot of space.
- For iPhones: clear the history and website data in the app settings for your browser.
- For Android devices: select an app in the Settings under Apps, click on Storage and clear the cache. Repeat this process for each app. If you find this too laborious, you can use a cache cleaner app that cleans all apps at once.
