Swisscom 3G network assessment

I received a letter from Swisscom informing me that my mobile phone, an ASUS ZenFone 7 5G, will not be able to make normal calls or emergency calls when 3G is switched off. I was kindly advised to get an up-to-date device.

However, my mobile phone works with 4G+ and 5G not with 3G. So the information is wrong.

So be careful with such letters!

Yes, there is a lot of false information in circulation, including with my “Travis” Translator, which has always worked with the MultiDevice with 4G, but that’s not a problem, the important thing is that it continues to work accordingly 😀

If the Asus does not have the correct configuration for the Swisscom network, then it cannot use Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and can therefore no longer be used for making calls, as 2G or 3G is required for the “old” telephony. So Swisscom is right.

I received the same letter for my tablet which supports 2G/3G/4G in automatic selection. But that’s just for data.
The letter clearly states: No emergency calls and no normal telephony (mobile internet and SMS remain available).

You can check this by making a call and seeing if the symbol at the reception level changes to 3G or 2G or if VoLTE is displayed.

You can also check whether VoLTE is active in the call menu.

Important! This information in the letter is not wrong at all. You can still use data, but your Asus obviously doesn’t seem to be able to handle telephony via 4G (VoLTE). I would check this first. If you want to continue using the device to make calls as well as data, your device must be capable of VoLTE. If it can’t, you’ll need a new phone. It is not without reason that customers who will be affected by the 3G switch-off are currently being sent a letter.

Samsi The fact that it can do VoLTE, which every phone can actually do, is not the problem. The problem is - remember the many discussions about Google’s Pixel devices, where I was always accused of simply not wanting them to work - that the manufacturers have to implement the configuration. And the manufacturers of Android devices often only do this if they officially sell the devices in Switzerland for the network operator. Devices bought via Digitec & Co are simply devices that were actually intended for other markets …
