Swisscom receives the SRF signal directly from SRG. So I think what comes in gets passed on. For 4K, all production channels in the broadcasters must be able to support 4K. And most broadcasters are probably still a long way from that. The switch to HD wasn’t that long ago and most devices probably haven’t been written off yet. It would be easy for Swisscom to distribute the (main) channels in UHD. The network would certainly have to be expanded again in some places.

Here is the official announcement from SRG, which also shows that there will be a UHD event channel later:

From June 2021, redistributors (cable companies, IPTV and online providers) will be able to obtain data streams of different quality and transmission rates directly from SRG. New, for example, in full HD quality. Once the relevant clarifications have been completed, a UHD event channel will later be set up in the redistribution playout. Individual programs produced in UHD are also offered to redistributors for their networks. @DomiP

This has nothing to do with 2021. Technically even 8k would be possible, but ultimately it’s a question of finances. The introduction of UHD involves investments running into millions. HD has only recently been introduced and these investments must first be recouped. Not easy given SRG’s dwindling profits. In addition, studio and transmission equipment is not thrown away after just two years like a private smartphone.

Yes, I realize that too. In general, I’m more of an opponent of the SRG monopoly anyway. The potential would be so great to create something for young people here too - but they prefer Disney+ and Netflix because “Gredig Direkt” or “NZZ Kultur-Gelaber” is less for them. (I feel the same way too).

Good day,

As is well known, SRF will be broadcasting in 1080p from June 2021. A corresponding stream is made available to network operators.

Does anyone know what Swisscom is planning in this regard? Maybe someone here has some information about it.

Thank you very much.

@ThomasS Thanks for the info.

What about SRG’s planned UHD event channel?

This was originally planned for the middle of the year, but has been postponed to the beginning of 2022.

We cannot say anything in advance about potential channel activations. Of course, we are in constant contact with the SRG and if anything concrete arises in this case, we will also inform you.

Doesn’t quite fit in here… whatever…

Do you always have sound interruptions on SRF 2 (language German Dolby Audio)?

Funnily enough, only at Live Sport and the studio, again today at the Swiss European Championship game, but also yesterday at the Athletics Diamond League.
