First experiences with 10 Gbit/s XGS-PON Anschluss

    • I switched to XGS-PON from P2P-PON last Thursday on April 9, 2020 and am quite disappointed with the current results.
    With P2P PON I was able to get a 1.7 sec ping from Internet Box 3 to the Wingo server in flocks and at 800-900 Mbit/s upload and 800-900 download.
    With the new 10 GBit/s I am now at 2-3 sec ping and 800-900 MBit/s upload and 200-300 download.
    After researching XGS-PON technology, it was clear to me that I would never have a 10Gbit/s connection. It’s really surprising that I would get worse results.

    What are your experiences?

    Do I have to change the configuration of the IB 3?

    Swisscom Call Center is completely overwhelmed and doesn’t know what my problem is. You think I should be happy with the 800 Mbit/s since my Playstation 4 doesn’t have the necessary technology anyway. A bit cheeky for paying 140.-/month for my Anschluss.

    Did you also use the new fiber optic cable that you got with the new fiber optic module?

    And where did you do the speed test, on your PC?

    The PC and laptop usually have a 1GB port.

    The IB3 only has 1 port of 2.5GB and 4 ports of 1GB.

    You won’t be able to bring any more data through this port. And then something is deducted from the 1 GB for communication between the router and the end device.

    I always tested the connection from the socket to the Internet Box 3 directly from the swisscom Internet Box 3 Cockpit website using Swisscom’s integrated speed test.

    The firmware 10.00.50 still has bugs for XGS-PON. You need 01/11/14 so that everything works properly. In addition, as far as I know, the speed servers are not yet connected with 10 Gbit/s, as there are some stops in the rollout of network changes due to Corona. I don’t know when that will happen. @MichelB is the expert for IB3.

      I’ve now downloaded CNlab and now I get around 800 for upload and download.
      It’s probably just a problem with my hardware that I can’t get a faster connection.
      Would it be possible to carry out a test on all ports at the same time and test whether there is a faster connection overall than before?

      CNLab also needs adaptation on the network. For now all you can do is wait. And yes, you can of course later start a donation test using x devices in parallel and then add them up. But the guys in the lab did it and it really goes up to 8.8 MBit/s if you use various LAN and WLAN devices in parallel.

        I know that I can’t receive a faster connection on my devices and that I don’t need a faster connection at the moment, but I would still like to know whether something has changed and whether my connection from the router to Swisscom is now well over 1Gbit/s.

        I just think it would be cool if you understood what I mean.

        We are currently working on expanding the Internet Box Speedtest to 10Gbit/s. This will happen in the next few weeks.

        This will also be the only way to test the 10Gbit/s. As long as you have a subscription with the appropriate service speed, of course.

        It should also be mentioned that XGS-PON has a relatively large overhead. So you will measure approx. 8.2 / 8.0 GBit/s.

        As already explained, you will get a maximum of 2.5Gbit/s from the LAN. But you need the appropriate equipment.

        Theoretically, it is already possible to carry out tests across multiple ports using iperf3 or other measurement tools. But this requires a corresponding server in the network.

        In the laboratory, of course, we did this with the Internet-Box 3. This is to show that the IB3 can also utilize the speed of the new fiber optic technology aggregated across all ports (LAN and WLAN).
