Fritz!Box 5590 on Swisscom network

  • Hello community!

    Goodbye everyone! šŸ¾šŸ„‚

Sometime in January I will probably get glass (XGS-PON) for my private customer Anschluss. As an ā€œoldā€ frit user, I will probably get one again. I am aware that in this thread the use of the 5530 has been discussed. And besides, I donā€™t want to get involved in the comparative discussion of IB4 and FB-xy. There are still features that I like about the F-BĆ¼xe and that I donā€™t want to miss tomorrow either.

I am aware of the basic advantages and disadvantages of the cheaper model and I donā€™t want to start the discussion here about 10MBit vs. 2.5MBit port. The friends from Winterthur have put instructions for the 5530 and the 5590 5490 online. In this respect, I assume that with the correct settings and the possibly identical SFP for XGS-PON, operation should be technically possible. (Objection desired!)

Does anyone out there have the 5590 chip running on the Swisscom network?

It is clear to me that the 5590 does not yet appear in the list of certified routers. But I assume that this will happen with the next update of the list.

Edit 2023-01-02: The friends from Winterthur actually have the 5590 box neither on offer nor in the instructions. But the question around remains the same.

@andiroid why donā€™t you get the Nokia Bridge? Then you can connect whatever your heart desires.

As you have read several times here in the forum, AVM is having a hard time supplying the right SFPs to private customers. There were never any problems with deliveries to ISPs.

Hey @user109! I thought about that too and Iā€™m still weighing it up. If someone confirms to me that the 5590 is running, I would prefer one instead of two devices and replace the somewhat old 7490 used as a router. šŸ˜‰ The advantage of the bridge is that I have a little more flexibility behind it at the price of possibly slightly higher electricity costs. Iā€™m actually still undecidedā€¦

@andiroid but Iā€™m guessing it could take up to a year for Swisscom to undergo certification (if it happens at all).

Currently the ISPā€™s (e.g. QuickLine) use the Zyxel router and FB5530 AON (XGS), FB5530 AON (BX).

AVM would still have to integrate the driver for XGS-PON into the FB, but whether they would really do that for the small Swiss market is questionable. Because this driver really only works for the infrastructure here in Switzerland.

Unfortunately, replacing the SFP is not enough, as SFP+ drivers are always required.

Thatā€™s why my opinion is that the bridge represents an investment in the future with regard to future models.

Thanks for the post @user109. I just see that I also wrongly praised the friends of Winterthur. They ā€œonlyā€ have the instructions for the 5490 and not for the 5590. šŸ„“ I corrected that above.

In this respect, I understand your point about media converters even better. šŸ˜‰

Iā€™m actually optimistic about the FW updates. In the past, AVM always tried to provide their ā€œoldā€ books with the new OS. They have been putting together a strategy for modular FW support over the last few years. Otherwise the testing effort, which may already be substantial, will explode into exorbitant proportions. šŸ’£

Interestingly, Digitec already has an offer with a [5590 with XGS-PON](https://www.digitec.ch/de/s1/product/avm-fritzbox-5590-fiber-xgs-pon-router-23316533? ip=5590). Has anyone had experience with this version? šŸ¤”

Edit: PS: Interestingly, AVM FTP has also had FW 07.30 for the 5590 since December 21, 2022 . For the little brother this was already on September 1st, 2022 uploaded. šŸ™‚

Update: Apparently there is a problem with Swisscomā€™s certification process:

    [https://community.sunrise.ch/d/25861-fritzbox-5590-xgs-pon-bald-certified](https://community.sunrise.ch/d/25861-fritzbox-5590-xgs-pon- soon-certified)

    Thatā€™s a nice view.

    šŸ™‚

I read the comment at Digitec. There are two models there:

So you have to know what you have and what you have to order. The notice came from the ā€œwrongā€ product. And yes, I now understand the recent comment about AVMā€™s rather confusing product policy. I canā€™t find it anymore, otherwise I would have linked it.

@hed: Despite certification, Swisscom will not offer support in the event of problems.

As a super user, do you actually get a commission for each post you write!? For me, the certification offers two main advantages:

    • I get some assurance that the hardware will not disrupt the infrastructure and hope that certain problems will be identified and resolved during certification.
    • I get hardware that I know. I appreciate its specific features. And the purchase of it reduces the remaining risk of ā€œit doesnā€™t workā€.

A win-win situation is created. The rest of the answer can be read here.

And the fact that the comment is not true can be read here, as it was part of the Solution contributed by a Swisscom employee. Done voluntarily, perhaps even in your free time, but very much - and precisely for that reason - very much appreciated.

@Herby: Correct. But then at least the ā€œrightā€ hardware

Do you mean that ironically!? In my opinion, the right thing is the hardware that best meets the customerā€™s needs.

Cool, thanks for the info. šŸ„‡ Do you have a timeline? Rough. 1 week, 1 month, 1 year?

Of course, this depends on the result of the testing. I canā€™t say the timing, estimated sometime in Q1/23 if everything is ok.

    Good day,

Thank you for your inquiry about the compatibility of your FRITZ!Box 5590 Fiber with a Swisscom-XGS-PON-Anschluss.

Basically, the FRITZ!Box is suitable for being operated on XGS-PON connections. However, Swisscom has not yet tested this FRITZ!Box model, so it is not mentioned in the help. Since there are no restrictions on the FRITZ!Box side for operating it on the fiber optic connection and also with the Swisscom access data, the setup itself is also described for the FRITZ!Box 5590 Fiber. If the facility is rejected by Swisscom, there is unfortunately currently no immediate way to enable the use of this FRITZ!Box model. I hope for your understanding and wish you a pleasant day.

    Kind regards from Berlin

The tests are apparently on their last legs. It might not take that long. I think we will be informed here when the time comes.

The 5590 is now also listed for XGSpon on the Fritzbox Switzerland site.

    • FRITZ!Box 5590 Fiber with FRITZ!SFP XGS-PON (Art. No. 20003015)

I donā€™t know if itā€™s working either, but I wouldnā€™t switch now, Iā€™m a bit disappointed with AVM, not even a 2.5 Giga-Lan connection, let alone a 10 Giga-Lan. Even though Iā€™ve been waiting extremely hard for it now.

Just saw that the 2.5 Giga-WAN Anschluss can also be used as a LAN connection.

OK If he would leave, I would also slowly change trains.

Does anyone know more about whether it works!? I just contacted AVM and asked what it looks like.

    Greetings Steff

Oh yes, thatā€™s the Facebook entry from Fritzbox Switzerland from February 24th, 2023, but what does THAT mean!?

    @Roger G

Your amount is already 2 months old and I wanted to ask what the certification of the Fritzbox 5590 xgs-pon looks like?

Q1/23 is slowly coming to an endā€¦lol

Brack and Digitec already have the part for sale and Fritzbox Switzerland also lists the part on the Swiss website with the item number 20003015

There are various fiber optic connections in Switzerland, for which there are appropriately equipped FRITZ!Box variants. The FRITZ!SFP module that is suitable for the respective technology is already pre-plugged.

    Hello

Iā€™ve had the Box 5590 at home for almost 7 weeks.

I connected the box today and tested it but it still doesnā€™t work.

You can buy the box but it doesnā€™t work on Swisscom?

    Too bad

    Show original language (German)

Thatā€™s why I asked Fritzbox today.

I donā€™t think itā€™s particularly smart to sell a box without specifying exactly how and where it runs.

Yes, in stock, I did this with the Zyxel modem for a few years, and it didnā€™t work, even though they advertised that it would work. Luckily I was able to return it after a rather long time.

I came across the Swiss Fritz Facebook and website by chance and saw that AVM was promoting the box and thought that it was finally time.
