  • Apple Watch with own cell phone number (family configuration, eSim) & roaming does not work.

For 2 years I’ve had the problem that my sons’ Apple Watch doesn’t work abroad (even though I bought a data package). Important to know: the Apple Watch has its own eSim with its own telephone number, which was installed via family configuration. Swisscom couldn’t help me, so I researched for a long time and found the reason:

“International roaming is not supported for cellular Apple Watch models used with Family Setup.”

Here is the link from Apple Support where you can read the mega small print about roaming:

Now my question to Swisscom: Is there no workaround to make it work? E.g. Download the 1-3 eSim’s (I have 3 children and 3 Apple Watches) onto an old iPhone with the same cell phone number as the 2-3 Apple Watches, install them and put the cell phone away and don’t use it. That would be a way of bypassing the family configuration, right? Would you then have to pay extra for the 2nd device even though you only used it once to bypass the family configuration?

  • I had the same problem. Apple and Swisscom are blaming each other. Here is the solution, which I painstakingly researched myself: If you also have a family configuration (i.e. your own phone number for the Apple Watch only), here’s the answer as to why it doesn’t work:

“International roaming is not supported for Apple Watch models with cellular service used with family configuration.”

Here is the link from Apple Support where you can read this in small print under Roaming:

Here is the solution, which I myself searched for with difficulty: If this is also a family configuration for you (i.e. a separate telephone number only for the Apple Watch), here is the answer to the question of why this isn’t working:

“International roaming is not supported for Apple Watch models with mobile when used with Family Setup.”

Here’s the Apple Support link where you can read that in fine print under Roaming:
