SRF, RTS and RSI finally in Full HD (1080p)

Dear community

We have finally reached an agreement with the Swiss radio and television company SRG: Just in time for the Football World Cup, you can watch your programs in Full HD with blue TV on all SRG channels** from mid-November**. The activation will take place gradually from October.

Which channels are now available in Full HD?

  • SRF 1, SRF 2, SRF info
  • RTS 1, RTS 2
  • RSI LA 1, RSI LA 2

**
What do you need?**

You don’t have to activate anything. If you meet the requirements, the channels will automatically be shown to you in Full HD.

What if Full HD doesn’t work?

If you do not receive a Full HD signal despite the UHD-capable TV-Box, your TV-Box is probably connected to the WLAN and the WLAN speed is not sufficient. You have the following options:

  1. Connect TV-Box to the Internet box via cable.
  2. Set TV-Box to “High Quality” instead of “Best Quality”: Settings > Video & Audio > Image Quality.
  3. Internet and/or WLAN-Box new place to establish the WLAN connection improve.

Which show in Full HD are you most looking forward to? We look forward to your comments and discussions!

Best regards
Corina S

Why do you need a UHD-compatible TV for Full HD? I’m assuming you’re confusing FHD with UHD. An HD TV with 1920×1080 is sufficient for Full HD.

HD: 1080×720 pixels

FHD: 1,920 × 1,080 pixels

UHD: 3,840 × 2,160 pixels

I don’t hope that the FHD stream is only activated when the box detects a UHD TV, because in my opinion that would be a design flaw.

Am I correct that you have to use the UHD encoder and so that the stream is scaled up from Full HD to UHD? So you haven’t received a budget for another solution for over a year? okeeeeeee

Well then let’s hope that it doesn’t just stay with the SRG SSR programs…

As I understand it, the programs are scaled from FHD to UHD so that the Blue TV boxes can process it 😂.

All’s well that ends well.

How do I see this? In addition to the better image quality, of course.

Is UHD / best quality available among the options?

@Gaeilgeoir

If, like many people, you sit 4-5x the diagonal away from the TV, you won’t notice any difference, but if you are at the recommended distance of 1.5 - 2x the diagonal, the difference should be visible.

That’s clear to me with the picture (distance is less than 2 times the diagonal).
I mean, like with the UHD channels, will there be three choices for picture quality?

  • hed likes that.

We have long suspected that the problem is that the speakers (or other hardware in the chain) cannot support FHD and that is why UHD streams spread the FHD signal. Corresponding tests were running in the background.

@hed You had a really bad day today, didn’t you? Look ahead. SC probably won’t invest money in FHD encoders if they have enough future-proof UHD encoders. The fact that they do not replace the HD encoders is more than sustainable.

Nope, I’ve just been looking forward to finally being able to use the performance of my FHD TV for months (or is it years?). The disappointment is even greater that it remains at 720p.

For the majority of customers it will also be incomprehensible why they should buy a UHD TV for FHD. I just saw sustainability from this perspective because I don’t know what the infrastructure looks like behind the scenes.

The majority of customers won’t even notice or see this - and the minority that “screams” for FHD will already have a UHD box anyway… so much for reality…

It’s like the audiophile clientele (who hear the grass grow…), they already have the appropriate equipment…

But that means that all customers with a Full HD TV cannot benefit from Full HD. In my opinion, sustainability looks different.

Yes, it is included in the communicated requirements. See 1st post by Swisscom employee CorinaS. This is probably more of a sustainable solution, as it has become apparent over the months that they cannot support FHD in terms of hardware. Be it somewhere in the signal chain or even in the speakers.

Customers who don’t yet have a UHD TV but would upgrade to a UHD device because they really want FHD are probably not that numerous (yes, I know, it’s probably the most pleasant way for the SC in terms of money).
