However, I also have a few questions:
If I put the Netopia router in bridge mode, does the RT-N56U have to perform PPPoE authentication? If so, what are the exact VCI and VPI configurations so that PPP authentication works well?
You have VDSL, which is controlled via DHCP at Swisscom. So you don’t need a PPP Crendential
If I want to connect the STV wirelessly to the RT-N56U, which hardware is best suited for this? Wireless connection kit for STV from Swisscom?
Absolutely. “Free” connection kits usually cause problems with multicast and QoS
What if I want to put the Netopia router back into the old normal mode, how do I do that if it is already in bridge mode?
Reset (press the ballpoint pen into the hole on the back for 20 seconds) or via Telnet
Thank you for your quick reply…
That means: simply put the Netopia in bridge mode and connect the Asus router at the back and it will then automatically be assigned the public IP address from Swisscom?
For the wireless connection between Asus router and STV:
That means I should use this hardware: http://shop.swisscom.ch/onlineshop/Pages/ProductDetail/ProductDetail.aspx?cat=OS_TV_DVB-T_und_Radio&subcat=OS_TV_Zubehoer&id=0000000000100317 31
And just connect this device to the back of the STV box? Do I have to configure the receiver somehow or is this all done via the WPS button!?

This means the DUO package from the Swisscom Shop. http://shop.swisscom.ch/onlineshop/Pages/ProductDetail/ProductDetail.aspx?cat=OS_TV_DVB-T_und_Radio&subcat=OS_TV_Zubehoer&id=0000000000100317 30

Do I have to activate the IPTV (wired) mode on my ASUS router on the Ethernet port that is connected to the connection kit, or multi-cast routing via wireless? (See my previous post with the answer and screenshots from ASUS)
I would say that if you don’t connect SCTV via the WLAN part of the ASUS, but rather connect the Swisscom kit to the ASUS using a LAN cable, that means “wired” in relation to the ASUS. But as I always say: “Try makes you wise” 🙂

I finally got the new model from Asus, the successor rt-n66u… An impressive device!
http://www.asus.com/Networks/Wireless_Routers/RTN66U/
Everything worked out great
- Switched Netopia to Bridge mode
- Connected to the rt-n66u
- SCTV also connected to the rt-n66u, the IPTV option on the respective port and the multicast routing activated.
Everything worked great, including the SCTV box, without any problems…
Now comes the BUT:
- My iMac could no longer download updates: Error Socket Connection Reset by peer (or something similar).
- My PS3 could no longer connect to the Playstation Network (I “forworded” all the necessary ports, tried DMZ, nothing worked!).
- While surfing I had DNS dropouts and the internet pages could not be accessed for several seconds
After all these problems, I decided to reset the Netopia router and this time put it in “IP passthrough” mode.
In this mode everything works great!
My question now: does anyone know why this didn’t work in bridge mode? Surely this mode is better recommended than “IP passthrough” to enable total control of the WAN and LAN network?

Are you sure the bridge mode worked? I ask because you no longer have bridge mode with the current firmware.
Greetings elchoer
Yes, I’m sure because I still have the old Netopia (the white one with the visible antenna on the side), I don’t know what firmware it has, but I was able to select the bridge mode in a drop-down menu without any problems. The router reboots and only the DSL LED lights up, but not the Internet Link LED.
The Asus router connected behind the Netopia receives the public IP address, the gateway and the DNS server information from Swisscom.
So in my opinion the bridge mode works, but in my case it doesn’t work properly…
Any idea?
Hello everyone, I tried it a long time ago and unfortunately had to make the same disappointing conclusion. Swisscom TV worked relatively smoothly, but I kept having problems or interruptions when accessing the internet with all clients. That’s why my Netopia router is no longer in Bridget mode and the Asus router is back in AP mode; too bad. By the way, about the bridget mode from netopia. You can reconnect your PC to the Netopia via cable and set the IP address of the PC manually, then you can still access the Netopia device despite bridget mode
@swissmaster: you can still leave your Asus router in routing mode without putting it in AP mode… All you have to do is select a different network (subnet for those in the know 🙂 ) for your Asus router.
For me, for example, it’s like this:
- Netopia: Subnet 192.168.1.0 /24 (24 = 255.255.255.0) @IP: 192.168.1.1
- Asus router: Subnet 192.168.2.0 /24 with @IP: 192.168.2.1
As you can see, these two are not on the same subnet and so you can route between their respective networks.
Thanks for the tip, I didn’t know that. And have you also activated ip passthrough on netopia? Is everything running smoothly? For example, for port forwarding, do you have to set something on both devices or can you only make all the settings on the Asus device? Speaking of which: what does the 24 mean after the IP and the subnet mask in brackets?
@swissmaster: you need to give your asus router a name (hostname), one that is easily recognizable…
Change the network on Asus as explained to e.g. 192.168.2.1
Connect the two routers to each other as follows: Netopia Lan Port (One of the 4, no matter which one) -> Asus WAN Port (or Internet Port)…
Restart both routers…
Connect to Netopia using a web browser -> Expert Mode -> Configure -> IP Passthrough (or comparable name in German) and select the previously defined Asus router name from the list.
Restart Netopia and voila!
You can then configure everything on the Asus router!

If the asus doesn’t always work behind the bridge (partial failures of around 3 minutes?) it could indicate that the igmp proxy is not working properly. I can imagine that the streams are not left clean and the Anschluss is streamed densely.
If IP forwarding is used in Netopia, its igmp proxy is still active, so it could possibly. still have an impact.
