Alternatives to Swisscom webmail with advertising

Dear community

On August 25, 2022, Swisscom revised its email email offer. Customers with Bluewin E-Mail light and Bluewin E-Mail basic who use webmail now have advertising if no ad blocker is installed. It doesn’t matter whether you have an internet subscription with Swisscom or not.

But even if you have an ad blocker installed, you may see advertising or the page may not be displayed correctly. This means that a lot of white appears first and only then do the emails come.

Here I would like to show you what options you have to enjoy bluewin webmail ad-free again:

  1. You switch to a paid Bluewin E-Mail pro or advanced offer. In addition to being ad-free, both offers also include more storage space and, with advanced, 10 email addresses.
  2. You install an ad blocker. However, the page may not be displayed correctly.
  3. You use an email program such as Thunderbird. Which offer many more options and convenience than Bluewin Webmail. For example, managing multiple accounts (including gmail, gmx, etc.) in one program. Filter to control emails, for example, sending a message from sender X to the trash as read when downloaded. and much more.
  4. If you need access to emails from other computers, Thunderbird Portable may be a solution. Thunderbird Portable is installed on a USB stick. You then plug it into someone else’s PC and have access to your emails.
  5. Look for a provider that offers ad-free webmail, although you then have to live with the risk that it will be the end of the day.
  6. Radical solution, you rent your own domain

You can find instructions on how to set up an email program at the following link:

And if you have any questions, the community is always happy to help.

The reason for my email address with you was the clear and simple structure and because I have a contract with you.

In order not to be bothered by any advertising in the future, I think paying over 200 CHF/a is a wrong measure. In times of inflation, you underestimate customers if we are considered customers.

After all, I’m advertising SWISSCOM with every email.

I’m unhappy with half a page on the screen.

I will find a suitable solution when this project is implemented in the near future

This forum isn’t about Swisscom, it’s about “customers helping customers”.

If you access the email on a computer you can e.g. Install Thunderbird and no ads will be displayed.

Or there are other options, unfortunately not free.

I would like to speak out again with my favorite; Infomaniak-Mail is my personal favorite functionally and visually. Free email address and integration of other emails included!

In addition, features such as the integration of kDrive and your own domain are free of charge!

Since I upgraded my old MacBook to ChromeOS Flex, I can generally recommend G-Mail, despite the “data protection concerns”.

The only thing that is free is the email address with [user-id][at]lk.me. With your own domain it is a paid offer there.

If you don’t have any concerns about entrusting your emails to US companies, you can get an email address with gmail.com, icloud.com, outlook.com, etc.

  • hed likes that.

I think - many customers don’t want to lose the Bluewin address they’ve used for >10-20 years and don’t want to switch to another mail provider. So I think this is only an option for very few people.

So the following options remain:

- Live with advertising (free)

- Use a local mail program instead of webmail (free and no advertising and other advantages)

- Pay CHF 1.90 / month (no more advertising in webmail) and 3x more storage for the mailbox than before

….keep on rockin'

Of course @Glotzologe only with Bluewin is only the at-bluewin-ch address free. Infomaniak also offers email, calendar, contacts and more in one suite 😉

And as far as US companies are concerned, the question is of course to what extent data from Swiss providers doesn’t also flow to America. The operating systems are usually all from the US and A.

Do they exist? Today, ad blockers can be applied specifically to individual elements on a specific website.

Anyone who can set this up (it doesn’t take much) will also be able to avoid (or deal with) these “undesirable side effects”.

Do these unwanted side effects even exist? Or is this simply polemic and fear-mongering? So far I don’t know any, or I’m not aware of it…

@kaetho

After I had previously had negative experiences with such blockers, I tried again with different blockers 2 or 3 years ago:

After the website operator made changes to the advertising, the advertising or at least a white space was there again, or the website was then blocked completely or desired pop-up windows or functions of the website were suppressed. Depending on the browser upgrade, the plug-in was no longer compatible and had to be updated. The performance of the browser also suffered in some cases. All in all, I had more trouble and disadvantages than advantages.

Based on my experiences, I therefore advise against using such blockers. But it is quite possible that there will be much better experiences with it.

Ok, my own experience, good.

It’s just that my experiences with ad blockers don’t match yours. Of course there is a little more maintenance effort than without. But for my application it’s worth it, I’m happy with it.

Hello Bluewin! That’s not a good idea. You can hardly read the emails anymore. Lots of space for advertising that doesn’t even exist. This is annoying and encourages you to subscribe to competitor products, including mobile phones and the Internet. I’m about to do this. Unfortunately. After many years at Swisscom.

@Hezavio67 Yes, that’s annoying, but there are ways to get around it, e.g. a subscription for 1.90 CHF/month, or installing an email program like Thunderbird or Outlook, there are no advertising.
