10 tips for greater Internet security
Unfortunately, there is no such thing as 100% security on the Internet. However, you can reduce the likelihood of an attack by following certain principles. The following 10 tips show you how to navigate the Internet more safely.
Tip 1: Protect access to devices
Use face ID, fingerprint or other types of biometric encryption to lock your smartphone or computer, preventing access to anyone else.
Tip 2: Update software
Check that you always have the latest versions of apps and programs on your devices, which ensures that they are continually improved. Updates are installed automatically, depending on your settings.
Tip 3: Take a critical approach to websites
Never disclose personal data on suspicious websites. Websites full of adverts, pop-ups and spelling mistakes are unlikely to be trustworthy.
Tip 4: Only shop in official stores
Low prices can be tempting but they are often too good to be true. You should only download apps and programs from official sites, such as Google Play or the App Store.
Tip 5: Do not access e-banking on external WLANs
Do not access your e-banking or personal accounts through a public network (such as in a cafe). Wait until you are on the Wi-Fi or mobile network at home to protect yourself from unknown access.
Tip 6: Back up data regularly
Back up regularly and store your photos and videos in a cloud. This ensures that you won’t lose your data if you lose a device and allows you to access it through the Internet (e.g. myCloud).
Tip 7: Use secure passwords
Protect the data in your customer account with a secure password. A password manager (such as Identity Security) can help you to remember your passwords.
Tip 8: Take a critical approach to messages
Beware of fraudulent e-mails and SMS! Fraudsters use phishing and false names to steal personal data. > How to protect yourself from phishing
Tip 9: Double login protection
Double the protection for your accounts by using two-factor authentication. In addition to the user name and password, you will also be asked for an SMS code. > Activate secure authentication in My Swisscom
Tip 10: Report fraud
Have you received a fraudulent message or been the victim of a cyber attack? Report your case to the National Cyber Security Centre or get first aid on iBarry.
