mbudget wifi calling / Samsung S7

Hello everyone,

I thought the topic had already been discussed here, but unfortunately I couldn’t find it.

We absolutely need wifi calling because the reception at our house is very poor. We were about to switch to another provider that supports wifi calling. Today, however, I came across information on the mbudget site that WIFI calling is supported in the subscription models. (see below).

Now I’ve tried everything on my cell phone and the option (on Samsung it’s probably called WLAN calls) doesn’t appear. I’ve already contacted customer service, but they don’t see a problem and say it’s not their fault and I should contact Samsung. We have the Samsung Galaxy S7 model with Android 8.0 (Oreo).

The option should be found under Settings -> Connections -> Additional connection settings - WLAN calls. Unfortunately, it ends after the “VPN” entry. I googled a lot and it turns out that the function is available with this cell phone model from Android 7 onwards.

My guess was that the SIM card didn’t support this and that a new one was needed, but the lady on the phone said no. Otherwise, the WLAN for data works without any problems.

Ev, does anyone have an idea?

Oh well, WIFI calling works at home (my business cell phone iPhone 6S, Swisscom business subscription).

Greeting

https://shop.m-budget.migros.ch/de/hilfe:

The Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and WiFi calling technologies are available with the M-Budget Mobile subscription. However, this service is not available for M-Budget prepaid numbers.

In principle, no device settings are necessary for VoLTE technology, which enables telephony in the 4G network and improves the quality of calls.

WiFi calling must first be activated manually in the device’s menu. WiFi calling is then managed by the device itself.
If after enabling WiFi Calling you notice that you are having more interruptions during your calls than before, we recommend that you disable this feature.

WiFi Calling calls are billed as calls from the mobile network. WiFi calling is currently only available in Switzerland.

If the option does not appear on the phone, it is likely that your device does not support this feature.

Apparently it is arbitrary which model a provider supports wifi calling…

Well, I’m thinking about whether we go with the Galaxy S7 to the competition, with the hope that the functionality for this model is activated there, or whether we stick with mbudget and buy a cell phone model that supports wifi calling in the dme network can. Does anyone have experience with wifi calling on the mbudget network?

For example, I’m interested in the Samsung Galaxy S10, or alternatively the new iPhone SE, but I’m not an Apple fan, so I prefer Android. The Galaxy A51 is canceled due to a bad camera (video).

The topic of “Wifi Calling” has already been “well chewed through”. Please continue reading here:

Until the SIM card has been successfully tested in another mobile phone, you should not expect much help here! Does WiFi calling work with this SIM card in another cell phone?

The Samsung Galaxy S7 is already EoL (End-of-Life). And no longer receives security updates from the manufacturer:

https://security.samsungmobile.com/workScope.smsb

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/End_of_life

For Android mobile phones that are in “EoL” status, I recommend installing a custom ROM:

[/t5/Mobile/Neues-telefon-f%C3%BCr-Senioren/m-p/623124#M7663](https://community.swisscom.ch/t5/Mobile/Neues-telefon-f%C3%BCr-Senioren /m-p/623124#M7663)

If the cell phone needs to be replaced, we recommend purchasing an Occassions smartphone. When purchasing the Occassions smartphone, make sure that the smartphone is officially supported by LineageOS or /e/.

@GrandDixence on the subject of custom ROM: I am fundamentally against large, dominant corporations and try to avoid Microsoft, Apple etc. if possible. We have Ubuntu on the “family computer” at home, and the kids had (!) it on their laptops too. His daughter’s phone (Samsung Galaxy S5) runs LineageOS 16, while his son’s phone (same model) still runs the original software. The Galaxy Tab S2 also runs LineageOS 16. So as you can see, I’m happy to try out alternatives. Conclusion after 2 years: Home PC stays with Linux, Galaxy Tab too. The S5 is quite unstable and there are always various problems. The children have now landed on Win 10 (more or less due to Corona). Installing LineageOS is anything but easy. It really takes a lot of know-how. The time you spend on it shouldn’t be neglected either. Otherwise, I would like to note that wifi calling does not work/is not available on the S5 with LineageOS, but I haven’t researched further. Conclusion after 2 years with LineageOS: I wouldn’t do it again.

Yes, I’ll test the S7 with my SIM card and vice versa, then I’ll report back.

PS By the way, the S7 doesn’t seem to be well supported by LineageOS, unlike the S5.

Greeting

When buying a new device, you should pay attention to the manufacturer’s promise as to how long it will provide monthly security updates for the cell phone.

Apple mobile devices are known to receive security updates for the longest time. For Android devices, for security reasons, you should choose a cell phone that is included in the “Android Enterprise Recommended” AND “Android One” program:

https://androidenterprisepartners.withgoogle.com/devices/

[https://www.heise.de/newsticker/melde/Google-writes-Android-Manufacturers-two-years-security-patches-vor-4203113.html](https://www.heise.de/newsticker/melde/ Google-writes-android-manufacturers-two-years-of-security-patches-4203113.html)

https://www.android.com/intl/de_de/one/

AND has a Samsung\ or Qualcomm\ chipset:

The GSMArena website is happy to provide information about the chipset and release date of a mobile phone:

Newer Nokia models with Qualcomm chipsets are recommended:

https://www.nokia.com/phones/en_int/security-updates

Aside from the “Android Enterprise Recommended” and “Android One” programs, only a few Android devices can be recommended for security reasons.

- Samsung Galaxy S10/S10e Enterprise Edition

Samsung chipsets are considered the most secure mobile phone chipsets (see above). Samsung Knox is a very good hardware-based security feature of Samsung mobile phones. That’s why we recommend purchasing the “Enterprise Edition” of Samsung mobile phones. Samsung is currently promising the longest monthly security updates for the Samsung Galaxy S10 and S10e in the “Enterprise Edition”.

I have listed the other important points to consider when purchasing:

listed.

@GrandDixence Thanks for the detailed information. I’ll study them all carefully. We’ll probably need a new phone so that wifi calling works.

I did a test:

Initial situation:

Samsung Galaxy S7, mbudget subscription: wifi calling doesn’t work

Iphone 6S, swisscom business subscription: wifi calling works

Card exchange:

Samsung Galaxy S7, swisscom business subscription: wifi calling doesn’t work

Iphone 6S, mbudget subscription: wifi calling works

What’s interesting is that many S7 users seem to complain about the lack of the wifi calling option. Also with the latest SW version. But for others it seems to work. Nobody knows what it is ultimately about.

@GrandDixence sooorrrry! I just corrected the post. wifi calling works very well with mbudget. So it’s on the smartphone. At the moment the Samsung Galaxy S10e EE Enterprise Edition, 128 GB, 3Y guarantee is online for 499 CHF. I’ll probably hit it up. An alternative would be the iPhone XS 2020, which would even be a bit cheaper with 64 GB. It would even have the advantage of being provided with patches for longer (with the EE I think it’s guaranteed for 4 years, but that’s from the start of production, i.e. 2019+4=2023, with the iPhone XS 2020+5=2025.). Difficult decision…

Basically, Android and iOS are two different worlds/philosophies that you should basically choose between, both with some advantages and disadvantages.

@aga_peter

The iPhone SE 2020 64GB has technology that is found in more expensive cell phones, at least if you have to consider the budget it is a good price.

We all have an iPhone SE in the family, but with 128GB because of the many photos and videos.

But as already mentioned, Android and Apple are partly different worlds.
