Very good question, but difficult to answer.

The only thing I can answer with certainty: Local save and restore via a PC works much better in any case.

For a while I frequently switched Internet boxes back and forth for testing purposes (IBS, IB2, IB3).

I estimate the result with the local save/restore to be around 95-100%.

What is missing always depends on the box and release, i.e. a subsequent check after the restore always makes sense.

There is certainly still room for improvement on Swisscom’s part, but you will probably never be able to achieve 100%, especially when changing models, as the settings sometimes differ.

I always use the data backup as a file, then I can restore it.

When you send the file to the server. It will automatically be returned to your box after a factory reset or replacement.

I just know from the IB3 pilot that not all data was automatically saved on the Swisscom servers.

That the customer does not unintentionally make another mistake.

The WLAN name and password are securely stored there. Port forwarding and phone book according to IB3.

DYN-DNS was also secured for me.

Unfortunately, I can’t tell you whether the icons are saved with the names. Whether these go to a local backup

In my opinion, the matter has not yet been optimally resolved. My wish are the following 2 selectable variants of factory resets:

A: Factory reset where all data is completely deleted:

This could prevent any junk in the backup from being transferred back to the box, i.e. you could carry out a complete manual reconfiguration from scratch

B: Factory reset with restore of all parameters from the previously created backup

When changing models, I can understand that settings are lost. On the other hand, it has to be said that 90% of the settings have been the same in all routers for years, at least what can be set in the IB3.

@Lori-77: The port forwardings were definitely not saved (don’t know what you mean by “according to IB3”), but perhaps they are stored in the local file. I think the whole thing with the save in Kundencenter is intended more for the most important settings of dummy users, so that after a device replacement or firmware update they can continue to work normally and don’t have to use support. Let’s be honest, most users are interested in the SSID and the WiFi password and of course the phone book if you want to use that.

Nevertheless, it is simply a shame that more experienced customers are lulled into the security of not being able to lose their settings. But the same applies here: Whatever configuration you do, you should document it (which of course doesn’t help me with 30-40 network devices that I have named, I would have to hack them in again despite the documentation).

@Mindscope manually assigned names and assigned icons are not saved. After a reset they are called PC-123 again.

That’s why I’ve gotten into the habit of carefully documenting all the settings in my network. OneNote works quite well for this, e.g. hyperlinks directly to the respective devices (in my case switches, NAS, IP telephones, etc.) or directly to a subpage of the IB are useful.

Ok, then you have to restore the config if you want to restore these things. But I’ve rarely done it so far because I usually want to do as little manual work as possible and want the installation to run as “out of the box” as possible.

If I reset the box, I don’t want to destroy it again with an old, possibly “messed up” config. That’s why I’ve gotten into the habit of manually updating the things that don’t come back and that I really want back after a reset.

    @MichelB: I saved everything in Kundencenter, but the supporter couldn’t tell me how to restore it, even after consulting the technician, and ultimately said that it would probably be restored automatically, and if so after that If anything is missing, it probably won’t be saved. Can you actually actively retrieve this from the Kundencenter? How?

    As far as I know, the same scope is backed up with manual configuration backups - whether in Kundencenter or locally on the PC.

      Unfortunately, even after a few weeks, the backup from the Internet box in Kundencenter is still not accessible. When you open the link in Kundencenter, it jumps back to the beginning.

        @MichelB: I have now received an old IB 2 (because with the IB 3 the DHCP server always stops working after a few days). But the exact same problem exists, i.e. the settings can only be retrieved from a locally saved file. In this case, did “redesign” mean the website and not the IB at all?

        At least I have now been able to understand that the recorded network device names are restored from a local file, which is great. The port forwarding will also be back afterwards. Unfortunately, almost nothing seems to be saved regarding WLAN. I assume this is because the SSID and key are restored independently of the backups at Anschluss of a box. That’s why you probably thought that you don’t have to save any WLAN settings in the file. Unfortunately, things like a permanently selected WiFi channel or the channel bandwidth are missing. You can live with that, but of course you may be surprised that the WLAN no longer works so well after a restore (fixed channels can be an advantage over automatic channel selection in many constellations, especially if you operate several access points). But once you know that, you can certainly live with it, you adapt quickly.

        The “redesign” meant the Swisscom Kundencenter homepage where the router backup page can no longer be opened, but you don’t normally need that if you save the backup from the Internet box on your own computer either way.
