Dear Swisscom

Can you explain to me why you don’t allow the setting between Mobile Preferred and WiFi Preferred on Android phones that are active with WiFi calling?

If you search the net, it seems to be a flag that the provider can specify.

Tested it myself with a Yallo and Salt SIM on a Huawei P30 Pro and S9+.

After changing the SIM and resetting the APN settings, these providers give you another option below Enable/Disable WiFi calling whether you prefer the mobile network or WiFi.

As soon as you insert your SIM, the option disappears after provisioning and mobile is definitely preferred in the background.

The phones only switch to WiFi calling mode if there is a virtual loss of signal or forced airplane mode but WiFi is activated.

In our case, for example, this is externally annoying because we have minimal Edge/3G reception at home (and therefore no VoLTE) but the devices stubbornly prefer the mobile network due to their presets and often lose the signal completely. A clean handover to VoWiFi is not possible due to the lack of VoLTE.

Hence the request to give customers the choice 🙂

By the way, with a Oneplus 7 Pro and a few workarounds, VoLTE and VoWifi work for me and the option with preferred remains 🙂

This is just a side note, but it would be really helpful if this were possible in the normal way on devices that are fully provisioned.

I don’t understand it either. I also have a SIM card from Swiss Mobile (airline) in my dual SIM device. I can easily select the prioritization there, but not with the Swisscom SIM. The same selection option is available on SIM 2, while on SIM 1 (Swisscom) it is simply not there on the same screen.

Exactly Roman, it is a part of the provisioning that I consider to be quite unnecessary.

One reason I can imagine, however, is that emergency calls are not possible via WiFi calling.

But you could still give the user the choice but prefer the mobile network by default.

In addition, with minimal Edge/3G reception, I can’t always benefit from HD Voice, for example, which would be possible with WiFi calling.

WLAN is “mobile communications for poor people”, WLAN lacks QoS mechanisms. In heavily used multi-user environments, this results in dropped calls and poor voice quality.

There is also the WLAN background scan, which leads to regular, short interruptions/pauses in the telephone conversation on smartphones:
[https://www.ghacks.net/2011/12/13/how-to-disable-wlan-background-scans/](https://www.ghacks.net/2011/12/13/how-to -disable-wlan-background-scans/)

\=> VoWiFi is an emergency solution that should only be used if cell phone reception is missing or patchy. The use of VoWiFi should be done consciously via forced airplane mode but activated WLAN if there is mobile phone reception.

Conclusion: The mobile phone provider Swisscom has configured everything correctly and competently.

You should also avoid using VoLTE if possible:

One can argue about WiFi calling. The problem is that each device manufacturer determines the settings when changing and not all cases are supported, such as switching from WIFI calling to VoLTE and back.

But VoLTE is an absolute must and superior to the other types. The KPIs are significantly better. We try everything to ensure that as many devices as possible use VoLTE.

I’m actually convinced of VoLTE, so I couldn’t complain. But as you write @Anonymous, you want as many devices as possible to use this. I have a Natel@Go subscription myself, but I know some people who have prepaid, and they wouldn’t be unhappy if they could benefit from it. When will this be the case that prepaid can also use VoLTE?

I’ve communicated this here several times - just a few weeks ago. The plan is that new prepaid cards will be able to use it from November. The current cards will then migrate from the old to the new IT over several months. Then you can use it too.

This week I discovered by chance that VoLTE and WiFi calling are now finally working for me (Essential Phone on Wingo) (maybe a little longer, but not yet a month and Android 10 had not brought any improvement before). What surprised me most, however, was that despite the network being on, “Wi-Fi call” appeared on the display. The topic of preference settings is obviously handled differently in Konzern (and please don’t turn it off for me now 😬).

Good afternoon Guido

Is there now a more concrete roadmap for when WiFi calling with inOne mobile prepaid will work?

I think it’s a shame that SC doesn’t want to activate the WiFi calling function abroad for inOne subscriptions (Reason apparently due to quality reasons), even though this was intended when it was introduced in 2015 and was communicated as such (see back then Media release [Better reception quality in buildings with WiFi calling] from August 27, 2015:

"WiFi calling is now possible in Switzerland and Liechtenstein and at a later date also in other countries. “We are planning to launch it over the next year,” says Marc Werner, Head of Private Customers. “Then customers can also do so abroad Benefit from better cell phone reception in buildings.”

Apparently it works for the SC competitor, so the quality is there. Even if there would be a loss of quality according to SC’s fears, SC should make this available to customers and let them decide whether they want to use the offer or not…..

Kind regards

Would be interesting, as there is often poor cell phone reception in Germany. WiFi calling would sometimes be very useful. We understand that everything is a little behind schedule.

But according to the latest information, prepaid has to be migrated to the new platform first, and as far as I know that’s not the case yet.

Since cell phone reception has recently deteriorated significantly where I live, I checked the matter with a network app (see screenshot). As soon as my mobile phone connects to the WLAN in the house, reception switches from UMTS to IWLAN. However, I cannot detect any improvement, as would actually be expected with this WLAN interworking connection. Who can explain to me how it works?

Thanks WalterB. The WiFi reception from the Internet-Box 3 in and around my house is great. I’m interested in why my mobile phone automatically connects via IWLAN when I get close to my WiFi. IWLAN is supposed to improve the in-house reception of mobile phones - but it doesn’t.

@bsbg

This is probably because your mobile phone always connects to it or as soon as WiFi is nearby.

As a rule, it is the case, or should be the case, that the WLAN reception delivers better quality.

But, no rule without exception.

Which phone is it?
