The whole issue of SMB shares (network shares), which must be ensured on all computers involved, has absolutely nothing to do with @WalterB’s personal aversion to the parallel use of the more modern IPv6 addressing .
So it’s best to delete the entire IPv6 discussion from this thread completely, as it will only lead to distractions and unnecessary confusion.
By the way, it’s best to only share folders on individual computers with other users via network access that you actually want to use on the other computers. Very often this is simply the Documents folder, but of course it can also be several folders.
To access the shared network folders of other computers, the most practical way is to set up, in addition to the existing local documents folder, additional separate shortcuts on the individual computer for the additional network folders, which will then look something like this on the individual computers could:
- Calculator 1: Documents (the local folder), Documents Calculator 2, Documents Calculator 3
- Calculator 2: Documents (the local folder), Documents Calculator 1, Documents Calculator 3
- Calculator 3: Documents (the local folder), Documents Calculator 1, Documents Calculator 2

Hi @gundi
The release is set on all computers as required. However, I still don’t have access as desired. Does the IB have a firewall that blocks it?
Traffic that flows within your home network (i.e. within 192.168.1.0/24) does not hit a firewall on the IB.
Frankly, to me that sounds more like a misconfiguration on the Windows boxes. If you want to have a shared folder on all PCs that is available on all devices, take a look at Syncthing.

And what does “as required” look like for you?
Are you on the home network with all three PCs?
The network identification is activated so that all PCs on the network can see each other?
read here: How to make Windows 10 visible or invisible on the local network | ITIGIC
In which network are the devices displayed?
Private or public?
When connecting to a network, you will be asked if you want to share data. If you say no, everything is closed for now.
What do you mean by released as required? How much knowledge do you have about the topic?
Turn off the firewall on the devices to test.
Do you have additional antivirus programs on your Windows PC or just Windows’ own protection program?

Oh, it’s another thread…
@gundi you write that you only have access to X3 from X1 and X2 if you switch off the firewall there, which you correctly don’t want to have in continuous operation. In post 3 you then add that you want to see all computers in the network “when you select Network” and not just the Win11 computers (X1 and X2).
Sounds to me like two possible sources of error, both hidden in the X3 settings: either SMB access is blocked as such, or just its display in the Windows network environment.
To test the former, turn the firewall back on on X3 and enter “\X3\” directly into the address line in Windows Explorer of X1 or Then it works, SMB access is enabled in the firewall and only the listing in the network environment doesn’t work. Then you should have the error in the so-called NetBIOS If not (i.e. if direct access doesn’t work at all), then there’s a problem with the SMB protocol somewhere.
Take a screenshot of your firewall rules starting with “File and Printer Sharing”, like this:
(Everything is deactivated for me because I don’t have any shares on my computer, it should look different for you).
Based on this, we can give you more targeted tips here.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
IP X3 = 192.168.1.113
Firewall to ON
Access from X1, X2 to X3 results
The website is unavailable
The response from 192.168.1.113 took too long.
Try this:
- Check connection
- [Check proxy and firewall](chrome-error://chromewebdata/#buttons)
- Run Windows Network Diagnostics

You were so completely convinced that your W10 PC was configured completely correctly, but on your last harcopy of the detailed firewall rules you can now see exactly the configuration error in the SMB shares of your W10 that @PowerMac suspected. PC.
Now you have a chance to prove in practice your level of competence requested by other users:
Now also recognize errors yourself and eliminate the misconfiguration on the W10 PC directly. Any time less than 5 minutes to find a solution will then result in a grade above 4 🙂

I think I have found the error, testing will show this.
I know that I don’t know anything!!
But still, many thanks to you know-it-alls.

Nobody said you don’t know anything, but rather how much knowledge there is about creating a network, so depending on our knowledge we can skip basic questions or start at the beginning and that shouldn’t be an obstacle.
We are not all-knowing either and have to check the internet every now and then to see what information or solutions are already known.
There are sometimes many different solutions to solve the problem, or even simple ones.

Regarding your Post No. 16: This looks like a browser error message. I thought you wanted to access X3 via Windows Explorer (SMB)? Doesn’t make any sense to me now, or am I missing something?
All of the rules in the “File and Printer Sharing” group are deactivated, so it’s only logical that access is not possible.
It should be enough to activate the following two rules (see also [here](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/file-server/best-practices-analyzer/smb-open -file sharing ports))
- File and printer sharing (NB session incoming)
- File and printer sharing (SMB inbound)
To maintain the full functionality of SMB and NB, also activate the remaining rules for the “Private, Public” profile.
Note that the rules exist twice, once for the “Domain” profile and once for “Private, Public”. In your case it would be the rule under “Private, Public” that you would have to activate. Which, to be honest, would make me a bit nervous in terms of security, but as long as you only operate the computers in the home network… Otherwise you could make further restrictions in the interests of security in the detailed settings of the rules in the “Area” tab. Or write your own rules. But that would be more for advanced users.
Also compare the firewall settings of X3 with those of X1 and X2.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
