4 Tipps für bestes WLAN

4 tips to optimise your WLAN

Whether you’re streaming films, looking for recipes or booking holidays, it’s important to have a good Internet connection at home. These days, you need to keep a cool head if your WLAN signal doesn’t reach every corner of your home or if the connection is intermittent. Here are some tips to help you get the problem in hand.

1. Place the Internet-Box in a freestanding position

Your WLAN works best when it has an unobstructed path. Therefore, place the Internet-Box in a freestanding and upright position as centrally as possible in the room. If the box is in a cupboard or behind the TV, the WLAN range will be restricted. Walls, other devices or plants in the immediate vicinity can be obstacles.

Advice for anyone with an older router: The Internet-Box 5 Pro offers a fast and reliable WLAN connection thanks to Triband Wi-Fi 7.

Is your Internet-Box in a distribution box? This greatly reduces WLAN reception. An additional WLAN-Box will improve the WLAN range.

2. Use a WLAN-Box for increased WLAN range

The further away the Internet box is from your smartphone, laptop or TV, the lower the WLAN speed. Walls and ceilings also impair the WLAN signal. That’s why an additional WLAN-Box can help. It extends the WLAN range, optimises reception and connects the TV box wirelessly to the Internet-Box.

You can connect the WLAN-Box to the Internet-Box by WLAN or Ethernet cable. For optimum WLAN results, we recommend using an Ethernet cable.

3. Test WLAN speed and locate dead zones

Websites loading slowly, or streaming keeps stopping and starting? Open the WLAN speed test in the My Swisscom app on your mobile. This lets you walk around your home and see in real time where the WLAN reception is best. You’ll be able to locate the WLAN dead zones and get some tips on how to improve your WLAN reception.

4. Discover useful WLAN functions

In My Swisscom, you’ll find a simple overview of all devices that are connected to the WLAN at home. You can also look up or change your WLAN password, activate a separate WLAN for guests and set WLAN standby times to automatically switch off WLAN at night to save power.

“The [WLAN-Box 3](https://www.swisscom.ch/de/privatkunden/produkte/netzwerkzubehoer/details.html/wlan-box-2-11041228?payOption=ONE_TIME&useCase=HARDW AREONLY&category=connection_accessories_RES&contractDuration=24&stch=pdp&ing=ptl-device-first&simplyDigital=true&journey=device-first) is a repeater (bridge builder) and access point (additional WLAN) in one.” - how cute are you? How about a more contemporary mesh?!?!?! For your information: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesh-WLAN

All well and good. But what if you have the Centro Business 2? How do I get a repeat WiFi that runs with a single SSID and code and the devices don’t have to register again?

To change the “channel” or “transmission power” settings, you must first activate the expert mode on the left. Left selection menu, at the bottom. Good to see on the screenshot from @Plaulleiwing76

Unfortunately, this is missing from the Swisscom instructions. I first had to look around in the menu until I found the “Channel” and “Transmit Power” options.

@Miorietol27 the text refers to home users in their apartments with a Swisscom subscription. The Internet-Box family is the first choice, not the Centro Business, which is primarily intended for Geschäftskunden.

There are also solutions with the Centro Business in the business environment, but they are not based on the Internet Box and the matching WLAN boxes.

@kaetho That’s only partially true. As a home user with a server that requires fixed IP addresses, you have a Centro Business Router… and as far as I know, Swisscom doesn’t offer a simple solution with a really functioning repeater or AP.

@Miorietol27 then you are someone who needs more than a 0815 installation with Internet box and WLAN-Box. So a solution that is a little more specific.

So it’s not far to assume that you also have some in-depth knowledge and could therefore actually set up a “meshing” WLAN yourself with suitable equipment. For example, I do it with Unifi.

I would add that if your router tells you that it is not optimally positioned, this is not always true. Swisscom routers must be equipped with gyroscopic sensors which return a non-optimal position message regardless of the quality of the signal. The important thing is to position it in a central location in the home with as few obstacles as possible between the router and the places where you want to have a good connection. A plant is not an obstacle, doors and walls, particularly thick and/or reinforced concrete, are real obstacles.

Also keep the élan card drivers of your wireless connected devices and the operating systems of your tablets and smartphones up to date.
