There is nothing free anywhere. If Swisscom were to give away the UHD box “for free”, this would be hidden and cross-subsidized via other fees.

The way it is now regulated, the direct polluter pays principle applies - and that’s a good thing. The customers who want the UHD box should pay for it and not the others who are satisfied with the “old” box for years to come.

A really stupid question. Do customers of a non-4K capable TV also have certain advantages with the UHD box?
- Does the UHD box react faster compared to the current 2.0 box? (That alone would be a reason for me to buy)

- Is Plex still an app?

- Is there finally Netflix support as an app?

- Does the UHD box work with the XboxOne?

I would be very interested to know if Teleclub Cinema HD could be seen for free on the UHD TV box? Or do you also have to buy the channel like with the TV Box 2.0?

That’s exactly how I see it too! In any case, I just ordered one and I think it’s correct that I have to pay 119 for it. Ultimately, this also helps to reduce electronic waste, as only those who really want to switch to the new box (because they are prepared to pay something for it) and not just everyone who simply wants it on principle because it is in the newspaper said…

@kev:
The box is massively faster and more powerful.
As far as I know (as of today), the apps on the box are identical, i.e. Plex is there. But Netflix doesn’t exist and probably won’t come.
I don’t know about the xBox…

  • kev likes that.

The prices for the UHD videos are not bad Eltern.

CHF 9.50 for A Question of Honor from 1992, I mean I haven’t even seen that shit in SD.

Or a documentary. This lasts all of 35 minutes!!! CHF 6.50. Yes, I still see a lot of potential for improvement 😉

Regarding the UHD channel list, I would start with these:

Do you already know whether the Teleclub HD subscriptions will be converted into UHD subscriptions and whether they will cost (even) more? My UHD box was sent today according to Swisscom. I’m curious!

Edit: Just remembered: do you need an additional “language package” for the UHD channels from Swisscom or are they all already included in the normal subscription?

Show original language (German)

@MichiBoa

So when I look at the prices for the VODs, it gives me little hope that Teleclub offers it for free.

As far as the other channels are concerned, I put forward the following theory:

If you stop renting the boxes and buy them instead, but the subscription price doesn’t get any cheaper, these channels should actually already be paid for.

It’s far-fetched, but Swisscom could still argue that way 🙂

Show original language (German)

@Dominic1 you mean the boxes fall from the sky and the people all work for free. If it were a new iPhone, no rooster would be screaming for it.

Who really needs UHD? If I buy a UHD TV, which was previously very expensive, then I have to be prepared to invest in the new technology. And if you have 3 UHD TVs in your apartment and really want UHD for all of them, you have to pay for it at the moment. At some point there will be no other, then it will be free (this was also the case with SC TV 1.0, when an upgrade to the new TV-Box cost 150.–).

The old box also works with the NEWEST TVs - you just don’t have UHD. I don’t understand why people who want more always get upset when the extra better costs something. It’s all voluntary

Show original language (German)

I think you @oldiesbutgoldies aren’t watching UHD yet:smileylol:

Since you are the only one on the market so far, you can of course set prices however you want. This mainly refers to the content itself, not even the box.

The hardware price isn’t bad either. 119.-

Let’s assume that the hardware costs 50% when purchasing and add a safety margin of 10. So rounded cost price of 70.- and I think this is high here, realistically we would probably be more like ⅓ of 119.-

So 1.36 million customers. How many of these UHD boxes are now desired? Guess let’s say 100,000 pieces.

That’s just 7.35% assuming that only every customer has a box. On average, I think it’s more like 2.

According to the formula 100,000 x (119.- - 70.-) = 4.9 million

Like Elon Musk, who is hip and not evil, Swisscom has already easily financed the development. (To start with, mind you…)

So as a little thought game of the day 😉

But what’s blatant is the content industry itself. Every other industry moves with the times and is not becoming more expensive. Good hardware needs to be replaced, which costs money, but the operating resources themselves remain the same price or become cheaper.

Not in the film and television industry. SD –> HD surcharge for the broadcast material. HD –> UHD, surcharge for broadcast material if the content gets worse and worse.

It’s a damn mafia and Swisscom is happily getting involved with Cinterade/Teleclub.

@thoems

I have to explain this to me, where do you pay more for UHD? Only the box will be charged (if you always want and have to have it, nothing has been changed in the subscription)

I have 12 Mbit and not 100 Mbit (like Vivo M). But since I want the full TV package and international minutes and everything works, that doesn’t bother me. A downgrade would never be an option for me, and I don’t need UHD. You don’t always have to go along with every bell and whistle.

And fiber optics everywhere? Who should build that? Where are skilled workers? Who should pay for that? In many cases it is also a political decision. In my large community, Swisscom would be willing to implement the whole thing, but the community/city absolutely doesn’t want to. All communities in the area have fiber.

And 30% not arriving at 90 Mibit can have various reasons, so you would also have to check the house installation. But 60 Mbit would also be enough for UHD.

Show original language (German)

@SaschaS

The option to have UHD is saved in your profile (analog HD or SD). So if the system recognizes your 20 Mbit, you only have SD or HD (which can change depending on the number of boxes. With 20 Mbit you have 2 boxes with HD, the 3rd would then be SD.

Show original language (German)

When will the remaining HD channels be changed to UHD? E.g. VIVA HD, MTV Music, NRJ TV and so on?

Oh, one more thing. You need 40 Mbits, we have 100 Mbits in our area. I use two TV boxes, but if I replace my TV box with the UHD box and connect it to the WLAN Connection Kit via LAN, will I achieve 100Mbits or will that be shared?

Show original language (German)

@Tux0ne

Yes, you’re right, I don’t necessarily need HD and at the time I had to pay 50 francs a month for Teleclub because the channel FOX only gave it in HD. That was just a luxury that I afforded myself.

The third generation of SC-TV 1.0 boxes also cost 150.00 and had a larger hard drive and were a bit better made. That’s 119.– less and anyone who absolutely has to have the thing (when I read that people need 3 UHD boxes, there must be money) just pays at the moment. And that for a technical advance that is not even salon-worthy. Why does everyone have to buy a box like this right now?

Wait and then strike when the time comes. Until then, things might look different in terms of pricing. The better TV-Box for SC 1.0 was given away for free at some point.

Show original language (German)

I wrote “I’m paying for something I can’t use because it’s included in the subscription”.

90mb is also the optimal result if the headquarters is close enough.
My colleague already has vectoring and gets 40-55 depending on the day. That’s why I assume that it’s not possible to get the required 40mb for UHD.

I was even prepared to contribute to fiber optic costs, but according to Swisscom information, this is not possible because fixed vectoring is being expanded

Show original language (German)

@Shirosaki

It will easily be a few years before channels become UHD channels. The first will be some pay TV channels. Especially with music channels, UHD doesn’t do much for you, I want to hear the music, not see it 😉

Show original language (German)

@oldiesbutgoldies

In general, I also think that there is no need to rush anything. Of course, the hype is currently underway, but disillusionment will follow. And at some point it levels off again.

When buying a screen, you should also make sure that it has at least 10 bits, otherwise you will soon end up buying a new 4K device again. UHD is nice, HDR is nicer!

Even though the new box is faster, the HD box isn’t really a slouch either. The speed of the TV box in the menu as a selling point, well. That would mean that the HD box is unusable, but I don’t think that’s the case.

Voice search is also a cool gimmick. But what would be more interesting would be where you can stop the use of your voice by Swisscom’s Big Data Engine? Voice search must be activated, but it would also be legitimate for the customer to have the opportunity to forego the further use of his voice…

Show original language (German)

@altair

Yes, that was probably a bad example. But the sound quality from SD to HD is significantly better and I thought it would be almost perfect in UHD.

Well, it will be years before my favorite channels like Pro Sieben or Pro Sieben Maxx (which isn’t even in HD) will be in UHD.

Well, then I can save at my leisure until I can at least buy a good UHD TV. 🙂
