Real flow rates

Good morning,

I currently have an Internet subscription with a provider other than Swisscom. Their contract stipulates 20Mb download. In reality, tests done on their network indicate a throughput of 13Mb. And pompom on the hat, when I do the performance tests on speedtest.net (on a server in Dudingen) the speed increases to 3.5Mb…

I am looking for a REAL supplier. What is the actual speed offered by Swisscom on a 20Mb or 50Mb subscription?

Thank you for your frankness.

I’m a little fed up with suppliers/liars.

Hi,

Swisscom will also not be able to guarantee you a speed of 20M. According to the contracts it is clearly stipulated: MAX 20M. Which means that the ISP will open “the floodgates” as much as possible on the telephone exchange. Then the distance that separates you from the exchange, the quality of this line, the quality of the line between your introductory box and your router as well as your PCs will influence the NET speed that you will actually receive.

To ensure you do a good speedtest, you must follow the following rules:

- Only 1 PC connected via ETHERNET to the router! Everything else must be turned off (other PCs, network printers, IP radio station, Iphone etc…)

- Disable anti-virus and firewall

- deactivate WLAN on the router (to possibly prevent other users from being connected to your WLAN)

- use a server dedicated to speed tests, and not a site including a speed test. We recommend using the Swisscom speedtest (also works for other ISPs) http://hsi.bluewin.ch/speedtest/

Although you have taken all of these steps, there may still be other sources of slowdown in your connection. (e.g. Drivers on your network card that are too old, no filters on all your telephone sockets, extension cable used between the socket of your telephone connection and the router and so on)

But as usual, if you want the most that your connection can offer you, then you will definitely check out! (e.g. to replace the end of the line between your entry box and your telephone socket with a twisted cable or to change your wall sockets)

I have the 20MB permanently but it depends on your line and the wired computer connection method is much faster than the wireless network.

I’m waiting for 50 Mbit/s activation on January 17, available exclusively with optical fiber.

My contract with Swisscom stipulates 20Mb MAXIMUM and this is a speed that I rarely achieve. The actual throughput that I measured sometimes goes down to 1.24Mb (not even the 10th). The legislation should be changed so that these operators learn to keep their promises. For now, it seems that this scam is legal and that the consumer has no other choice but to pay a lot for poor quality service.

nosferatu_x Sorry to contradict nosferatu_x. Indeed, if Swisscom specifies < 20 Mb and the result is less than 20 Mb, they keep their promise. This is simple arithmetic; there is no legal scam or legislation to change. Anyone is free to switch to another supplier of less poor quality. Proof of this is that yMag (author of the question) is a customer of another supplier, and that he has the same problems. The technical reality is stubborn, but it is the reality, and the miracles will happen tomorrow.

in fact Swisscom speaks of 20Mb maximum but also of 1.2Mb minimum

as long as you are in these figures Swisscom provides the services you requested

if you receive 1.24Mb it is indeed small but SC fulfills its obligations

You also need to see what the maximum flow rate is for you (on this link) and adapt your subscription

if you can only receive 1Mb it would be better to upgrade to the subscription at 34CHF/month

here in Switzerland whether this silk SC or another operator, no one guarantees

internet speeds, (let alone cable operators)

even worse apart from SC I don’t know of an operator who can tell you in advance

what flow rate can you actually have at home?

      Lasam

      I have swisscom VDSL 20Mbit

I still have the maximum (until Swisscom).

Beyond that, Swisscom cannot guarantee bandwidth.

But in general, I never had the impression that things were slow 😉
