Passwort-Dschungel: So behältst du den Überblick

The password jungle: how to keep track

Are you still using your one or two simple passwords for convenience? Do you save your passwords for auto-fill without really knowing where they end up? Find out how to manage your passwords easily, yet securely.

In today’s digital world, strong passwords are more important than ever. However, many people use a single default password for multiple logins. Some are more conscientious and set different passwords, but save them directly in internet browsers without protecting them. This is risky because hackers can easily find the data using malicious software and gain access to accounts.

iCloud Keychain for Apple devices

With iCloud Keychain, you not only have automatic access to passwords, but also to usernames, credit card details and security codes on all approved devices. The data is linked to your personal Apple ID, which in turn is subject to two-factor authentication (e.g. password and SMS).

Google Password Manager for Android devices

Android smartphones store passwords for apps, WLAN and websites automatically in your device’s operating system. You manage the passwords in your Google account. This only works with Google Chrome, though. So, even if you save your passwords in an internet browser, they are adequately protected thanks to an advanced encryption process (Advanced Encryption Standard).

Even safer: separate password manager

Using a separate Password manager keeps you as secure as possible when you’re on the move. You only need to remember a strong master password and log in using two-factor authentication. Thanks to the dual protection, your stored data remains safe even if your master password has been cracked.

You can install browser add-ons from most password managers. These automatically fill in the login fields as soon as you go to a known login page. The password manager also suggests secure passwords and saves physical passwords for you – such as the PIN code for your debit card.

We also offer a password manager in our blue Security subscriptions as part of the Security app Identity Security.

Furthermore, it is a Swiss product, supported by the Swiss Confederation and the European Union

Proton was born in Switzerland in 2014 by a team of scientists who met at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) and decided to make the internet a better place, where the first rule is privacy.
