Internet Booster 5G with VPN

  • Hello everyone,

I have a question about the combination of Internet Box 3, Booster 5G and VPN connection.
The IT department has changed my Arbeitgeber and the new PC for the home office only works with an active VPN connection. However, this means that the connection no longer runs via the booster, but only via the old copper cable, where a simple video call becomes an absolute horror. (My solution was to connect to my workstation via my phone’s hotspot, but that’s not optimal in the long run). I was hoping you could just disconnect the landline and let all the traffic go through the booster, but then nothing works anymore.
Is there a hidden setting on the Internet box that needs to be changed so that the VPN connection(s) can run via the booster? Or do you have another suggestion. (I don’t have a fiber optic Anschluss 😉

The PC for the home office is connected via WIFI and has a speed of just under 7mbps with VPN, but with a booster it would be 200mbps.

Thank you in advance for the help.

    • Hi @Jebonnof81

The vast majority of VPNs (sensibly) use UDP as the transport protocol, which is not supported by the booster (yet see @POGO 1104 post).

Depending on the VPN solution, your Arbeitgeber could possibly run the connection via TCP instead of UDP. It’s more inefficient per se, but probably faster in your case.

It should then work with the new booster platform (Swisscom Backend System). Coming around Q1/2024.

Otherwise no workaround at the moment, except for mobile hotspot….

    Oh, wow!
Many thanks for the quick response!
I actually managed to switch the protocol to TCP. Although I have no idea what that means or does. (I work in accounting.) But the connection is there and it works. Now the speed test even shows 60 mpbs, which should be completely sufficient.

    Thank you. 😁
