Abo und Netz inklusive Klimabeitrag: Was heisst das?

Subscription and network including climate contribution: what exactly does this mean?

Anyone who calls, streams or surfs with Swisscom does so with a climate contribution included – automatically and at no extra cost. But what does that actually mean?

Swisscom has already received several awards as a sustainable company and has been committed to climate protection and the circular economy for years. Swisscom even includes a climate contribution in your subscriptions. That sounds great. But how does including a climate contribution work with subscriptions and the network?

We make a climate contribution by cutting our carbon emissions to a minimum and by investing in certified climate protection projects for the residual CO2 emissions. Find out more at www.swisscom.ch/climate-contribution.

Network with 100% renewable energy

Antennas, servers, data centres: our network needs electricity. At 89%, electricity accounts for the largest share of our total energy consumption. We have been using 100% renewable energy since 2010. Mainly from domestic hydropower and solar energy: with over 100 installations, we generate some of our electricity ourselves. We have the most innovative data centre in Switzerland, which we cool using recirculated air and rainwater. The waste heat is used to heat homes in the vicinity.

Reduced-CO2 devices

These measures enable us to reduce CO2 in our own products, such as Internet-Boxes and TV-Boxes:

  • Using recycled materials to manufacture them
  • Reducing the energy consumption of our devices (for example with the deep standby mode on the new TV-Box 5)
  • Recycling and reusing Internet-Boxes and TV-Boxes

Recycling, repairing and reducing

By supporting the circular economy, we are prolonging the service life of devices. This means that, together, we are saving resources and reducing energy consumption.

  • Swisscom Buyback: We buy your old mobile back from you and prepare it to be reused. You receive the buyback value as credit.
  • Mobile Aid: Do you have a mobile phone you no longer need? It doesn’t matter whether it works or not: we will turn it into cash and donate the proceeds to SOS Children’s Villages.
  • Refreshed Smartphones: We sell low-cost, second-hand mobile phones.
  • Swisscom Shop: You don’t need a car to get to our Shops, and we send digital till receipts as standard, instead of printing them out.

Recycle, repair and reduce

This point seems extremely mobile oriented.

When the Swisscom Home app is switched off, some smart home devices will no longer be in use or will even have to be replaced with new purchases. How does Swisscom compensate for this climate penalty?

As far as I know (statement Swisscom hotline), the various TV and Internet boxes are also tied to the corresponding Swisscom Anschluss. Its use with other Swisscom customers is probably possible through reconfiguration, but what about continued operation outside the Swisscom network? Can the certified repair centers there also help? The TV boxes in particular with their great streaming apps and their own remote control are easier to use than, for example, Apple or Google TVs.

Here I can see, in response to your question, where Swisscom has potential for improvement and a spontaneous way to achieve a high level of benefit with little effort.

The smart home devices can still be controlled using the respective manufacturer’s app. The Smart Switch, Bulb and Button sold by Swisscom can continue to be operated via the myStrom app, for example.

TV-Box, IB and WB cannot be used outside of Swisscom, but when they are returned to Swisscom these devices will either be processed and professionally recycled. If you want to watch TV in an even more environmentally friendly way, you can do so using the Blue TV app on your Smart TV or the Apple Box. This means you are independent of the provider.
