Swisscom & BMW are bringing 5G into the car

Dear community

The BMW iX becomes the first 5G car with the new Multi Device option from Swisscom. In this way, the car becomes another networked multi-device device like a smartwatch or a tablet: you get in and, thanks to the eSIM in the car, you are connected to the best network via your mobile subscription.

Better connected – even without a smartphone

The vehicle becomes a mobile mobile device. This means you can make phone calls, send messages and access music or street maps via the Internet - even if your cell phone is left at home.

If you change BMW vehicles, you are immediately reconnected thanks to the “Follow-me” function and the personal settings are automatically applied.

How do I activate the new option?

The “Cars and Mobilities” option for CHF 10/month. is available to all private customers with a multi-device mobile subscription from Swisscom. Simply log in to the My BMW app and access the option. > For instructions

What do you think of this novelty and the first car connected with 5G? We look forward to your comments and discussions.

Kind regards

Love @Jedro

The Cars & Mobilities option is currently brand new and only available with BMW, which is why the option is currently not a fixed part of a subscription. However, if the option is popular and is also possible with other vehicles and thus appeals to a broad audience, we will be happy to consider integrating it into a subscription. At a later date, the integration of the Multi Device option for the car is quite conceivable, analogous to the existing Multi Device options with blue Mobile L (4 Multi Device options are included as standard in the subscription).

Kind regards Simone

I generally consider the development to be very interesting from a technical point of view, but it also poses risks (surveillance, hacking, logging,…) and all the electronic bells and whistles make the cars more and more expensive and the dependence on China greater and greater.

Personally, I choose cars based on the motto “Less (electronics) is more”. I don’t even need air conditioning or electric windows. Unfortunately, you can no longer find new cars without tons of electronic bells and whistles.

The GSMA standard “Automotive ID” AiD has been available since May 2022. I assume that all automobile manufacturers will implement this function in the medium term.
It’s always surprising how quickly Swisscom can implement such cool functions.

Hello @POGO 1104 beautiful vehicle from the 750 series. This probably won’t work for the 1996 vintage. 😉 Kind regards, MirkoP

Yes, “back then” the BMWs were still real “oil burners”….. 😉

This still doesn’t answer the question as to which year the 5G nonsense will be available…

Hey @POGO 1104 I still have the Netzwoche report Swisscom partners with BMW for “the first 5G car” in Switzerland | Netzwoche the first sentence is already there more informative: “With the electric SUV iX, the German car manufacturer BMW has brought its first 5G-capable series vehicle onto the market.”

It is a brand new item, only BMW can tell you whether there is an upgrade.

Kind regards, MirkoP

Hello everyone, I have ordered another X5 G05. Here too, the E-Sim option is already available but in OS 7 and not OS8. Does that mean it won’t be supported?
