Streaming to the screen of a second device is not possible

  • Today I wanted to stream my tablet to the TV again…

I now get the message “Unfortunately, paid videos cannot be streamed to the screen of a second device”.

But I didn’t watch a paid video, I just wanted to watch RTL2!

Has the app been improved for the worse, as has so often been the case? In any case, it’s useless for me because I can no longer use it properly in my caravan during the holidays.

    • Hello everyone

Video on demand, live sports events and encrypted channels cannot be played on some computers, monitors or tablets. The reason for this is the lack of digital rights management support on the devices. In order for all content to be played, the browser must support DRM and all components (monitor, cable, graphics card) must be HDCP 2.0 capable.

      Greetings Samuel

    No, only on certain channels.

What does it matter to Swisscom whether I watch directly on the tablet or stream my tablet screen to the television? This is an infringement on my personal freedom of use!

    @aki-ch

Where, what and how can be reproduced and protected against copying is regulated by the contracts with broadcasters and film producers.

Nope, that would be really ridiculous if RTL two had DRM protection for screen streaming active. In any case, it’s not the case with blue TV on iOS and Airplay.
But of course it could be an Android problem in the app.
What exactly did you want to stream from and to which device? What show was it?

Ps: You definitely won’t have this problem with Teleboy 😉

from an Android Samsung Tab S2 to a Sony TV.

    …and it wasn’t a paid video either.

With Pro7, RTL, RTL2… same problem everywhere.

Unfortunately, Swisscom is now forcing me to look for alternatives. Too bad 🙂

So we’re just talking about the same thing. I can’t test everything, only the free version of blue tv, because I decided on excellent alternatives 😉 In the end, life is too short to be annoyed or put off by the same thing over and over again for years 😂

In any case, I can’t find any restrictions with live TV streamed via Airplay on both iPhone and iPad. Also not streamed on Chromecast on live TV using an Android phone. I don’t have an Android tablet.
So are these replay broadcasts or recordings?

(Of course that wouldn’t be a problem with Teleboy either)

Very interesting that app users seem to be preferred over TV box users (who pay more to Swisscom than app-only users):

Apart from the first boot screen, no content arrives at the TV Box if the connected device does not support HDCP DRM.

@aki-ch Films and shows that require visual protection (DRM) are also shown on RTL2.

Can you watch SRF, ARD, BärnSPORT or blueZoom on the screen?

I just streamed from an Android phone with the Blue TV app 5.3.4 to a Chromecast and couldn’t understand the problem. Even the blockbuster Men in Black, which was shown on RTL2 last night, worked without any problems.

Maybe it’s a temporary problem that has now been fixed?

    If not:

Which blueTV app version are you using?

What connection between tablet and screen?

[Addendum] A series from 2015 via blue play (i.e. paid content) also works. [/Addendum]

    [Addendum2]

@Tux0ne According to your nickname, you also have Linux. Does it work there with DRM turned off?

Chromecast supports DRM, so you should be able to see something there even with vision protection activated.

    [/Addendum2]

The Blue TV app is 5.3.4. The streaming counterpart is a fire TV Stick 4K.

Everything worked without any problems until last week - unfortunately not anymore.

The problem appears to affect all private broadcasters. You can watch recordings, but not live TV and not with a time delay.

@Stauldoteiy82, I am also a TV Box customer. But when I’m on the go, I’m bothered by the long cable to the Internet box, which I have to pull behind. 🤔

That’s why I use the Blue TV app. Since there is no version for the Fire TV Stick, I have to use the tablet and so that I have a larger screen, I streamed the tablet screen onto the larger screen via the fire TV Stick. But it is probably undesirable and is therefore prevented.

ROFL, I can just imagine a journey with a kilometer long cable to the internet box.

I searched for it on my trusted search engine and apparently there are occasional problems with DRM on the FireTV Stick.

I assume you don’t have another streaming stick or an HDMI cable from the tablet to the screen at hand? (You may be able to buy the cable in the Swisscom shop and exchange it after 14 days if it does not work as desired).

P.S. If you have TV M or higher: Does the same message appear when playing bluePlay content?

@SamuelD But that doesn’t explain why I was able to watch all private German channels without any problems until April 3rd, 2022 and not since April 8th, 2022.

Nothing has changed in my components within this week.

I have never used a Fire Stick.

So that you can stream from an Android device, do you have to install the AirScreen app on the stick?

This is then perhaps not compatible with newer DRM protection?

With a 40 CHF Chromecast stick you don’t have this problem.

Contrary to the assumption that, like all other providers, you cannot stream to a screen (completely absurd), it works perfectly with Chromecast or Apple TV (Airplay compatible devices).

According to my clarifications, the channel was activated on April 6th. DRM encryption (Digital Rrealmanagement), for use on the web and TV app, is activated on 20 additional channels. Swisscom therefore meets the licensor’s legal requirements.

Digital rights management is a type of copy protection that does not prevent copying, but is intended to control the use (and distribution) of digital media. With blue TV Air, the DRM affects all channels that are transmitted in encrypted form. This includes all subscribed premium channels such as blue+, Sport Events and blue Video, but also channels that are included in the normal Swisscom lineup such as AXN, Discovery Channel, Vox, etc..

In order to play the content, the entire playback chain must support DRM.

@Tux0ne, I don’t need to install any additional app. The “Wireless Screen Projection” or “Screen Mirroring” function is integrated on the stick.

…and as written - until a week ago everything worked without any problems and there were no restrictions. I haven’t done a SW update since then.

@SamuelD; then that is the explanation. Thank you for your clarification.

This also includes RTL, RTL2, Pro7…?

Is there a list of which channels are affected by DRM?

If I can no longer stream to a larger screen while on vacation and the app isn’t available for Android TV either (both of which are now a fact), then it has definitely become worthless for me.
