Samsung A42

  • I bought a Samsung A42 from Swisscom to use as a 5G hotspot. I have now run a speed test on my cell phone at my place of residence in 8738 Uetliburg and it says around 20Mbit download, so far away from what 5G could do. This is despite the fact that the Swisscom card shows 5G green here. Is this because the Samsung A42 can only do 5G+ and that is not covered in this area or is it because the 5G antenna is not nearby or is Swisscom’s 5G information incorrect?

With my iPhone 11 I have exactly the same speeds in this speed test as on the Samsung A42, i.e. 4G.

    • 8738 Uetliburg only has 5G coverage (green on the map), not 5G+ (purple).

5G from Swisscom is based on spectrum sharing technology (DSS) and uses the same frequencies and antennas as 4G and therefore has the same speed.

Only the areas marked in purple have the fast 5G variant on the new 3.6 GHz frequencies and new transmitting antennas.

The Samsung A42 supports the current frequencies (Swisscom 5G and 5G+)

The information for 4G/LTE also applies to 5G, as the wireless technology is identical!

For fast data transfer rates, the cell phone must be outside on the balcony or on the garden terrace (outdoor) with an unrestricted line of sight to the nearest Swisscom cell phone antenna.
