Mobile ID does not work as a second SIM card in the iPhone

I would like to use a Swisscom SIM card as a second SIM card in a new iPhone SE. The first SIM card is an eSIM. Unfortunately, Mobile ID doesn’t work there. Mobile ID also does not appear under SIM applications. In other iPhones and also in other dual SIM devices, Mobile ID works without any problems.

Does anyone know the problem?

I’m interested in that too.

The way I see it, the app can’t do more than you can already do on the MobileID website, i.e. the app is superfluous. In addition, the registration of the MobileID, whether via app or web, is not “fixed” to the device, but to the telephone number.

@hed the MobileID is linked to the SIM, not to the number. Therefore, only the primary SIM can be used with Mobile ID. All other attempts will (currently) fail.

Of course Mobile ID works on a second device, I wrote that too. Why do I have a dual SIM device if that doesn’t work?

But this only works if you don’t use MultiSIM cards, because with these, MobileID is only possible with the master SIM.

Attention, DualSIM and MultiSIM are two completely different topics.

The app serves as an authenticator instead of via SIM. To activate it, an SMS is sent to the main SIM. But after activating the app, this is no longer a problem. SIM MobileID and App MobileID can be active at the same time.

See here.

Mobile ID then acts as an authenticator app for login processes or to trigger the expression of intent for electronic signatures. The ownership of the registered mobile phone and the stored biometric factor (fingerprint or facial recognition) - or the device PIN - serve as the two necessary factors for triggering an electronic signature. If a user is in a login process or would like to trigger an electronic signature, they will receive a push notification** from the Mobile ID app and can do so. The information in this document does not constitute a binding offer. Changes are possible at any time reserved.Confirm the process with the biometric factor or the device PIN.

Yes, in principle this could be done with the app. In any case, I can successfully test authentication via https://www.mobileid.ch/. But when I log in to Swisscom, I can’t choose whether I want to log in using a SIM card or an app. The SIM card is always searched. I don’t know that I could set this up anywhere.

Anyone who can use a Mobile ID-capable SIM card should stay away from the “Mobile ID app” for security reasons!

With the “Mobile ID App” you lose the security advantages of the “Mobile ID”-enabled SIM card. The “Mobile ID” capable SIM card is a HSM.

[https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware Security Module](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware Security Module)

The “Mobile ID App” cannot offer the security advantages of an HSM. The “Mobile ID App” was developed by Swisscom for customers abroad who do not want to, cannot or are not allowed to use SIM cards from Swiss mobile phone providers.

For more technical information about the “Mobile ID App” and the Mobile ID-enabled SIM card, see the documents on the “Mobile ID” website:

https://www.mobileid.ch/de/docs

If you have problems with the Mobile ID-enabled SIM card, please refer to the “Frequently Asked Questions” (FAQ) website:

https://www.mobileid.ch/de/faq

To support Mobile ID-enabled SIM cards, the cell phone must only support SIM toolkits. See post #2.

I don’t know if the eSIM is also an HSM with a trust rating of EAL4 or higher. That’s why I cannot recommend using Mobile ID on an eSIM!

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Criteria_for_Information_Technology_Security_Evaluation

The security level of the Mobile ID-enabled SIM card corresponds to the security level of keeping a gold bar in a bank vault.

The security level of the “Mobile ID App” corresponds to the security level of common 2FA OTP apps such as Microsoft Authenticator, Google Authenticator, FreeOTP. The security level of the “Mobile ID APP”, as well as the common 2FA OTP apps, corresponds to the security level of storing a gold bar in a tin can at home.

I don’t want to and can’t use the app at all. I would like to use the physically existing Swisscom SIM for Mobile ID. But it doesn’t work as a second SIM card in the iPhone SE. No one can yet tell me whether this is due to Apple or Swisscom.

If this Mobile ID-enabled SIM card works perfectly in another cell phone, then the problem lies with the cell phone and thus with Apple.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work automatically if you use 2 SIM cards, each with Mobile ID, in a DualSim device.

Before you start Mobile ID, you have to activate the data connection of the corresponding SIM in the settings.

Then it works, you just have to switch back and forth.
