Ineffective Wi-Fi parental controls

Good morning,

On the Internex Box, I configured various time periods and thus activated parental controls individually for several Wi-Fi devices.

The problem is that parental control does not work: at the time when the connection is supposed to be cut off, the devices can continue to surf..

Where is the error?

Second question: how to activate a second SSID with different activation ranges: for example an SSID for parents which is activated 24 hours a day and another for children with activation from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. during the week and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends -end?

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards

Hello Bouby02, thank you for your contribution.

Parental controls do not yet work optimally. Despite browsing time restrictions, your devices can indeed connect to 3G/4G networks. Swisscom offers additional security offers: Internet Security and [Mobile Security](http://www .swisscom.ch/fr/clients-prives/mobile/services-supplementaires/mobile-security.html) which include parental controls allowing you to lock sites and filter themes. This is independent of the network (3G, 4G, LAN, WLAN, PWLAN).

Regarding your second request, from the interface of your Internet-Box you have two WiFi networks: Wlan and Wlan-guest.

We suggest that you activate basic WLAN for your children by selecting the desired time slots for their internet access. For your surfing, activate guest WLAN by choosing the “24 hours / 24 hours” function. Currently it is not possible to define browsing periods via this network.

Best regards

Hello StéphanieC,

Thanks for the response.

I was not talking about 3G, 4G, LAN, WLAN, PWLAN connections but only the WLAN connection via the Internet Router.

Natels have network data blocked so cannot connect only via Wi-Fi (because Natel Prepaid).

So you confirm that the Internet Router’s parental controls are not reliable?

When will a firmware update be made to correct this annoying bug?

Same question to be able to add other Wi-Fi networks without using the Guest W-Lan account? (Because the W-Lan Guest account does not allow you to hide the SSID…)

When will the Firmware allow it?

However, these functions seem to be basic functions. How could this have been forgotten?

At home it seems to me that the parental control which limits WiFi access by time slots works.

In addition I don’t see the use of a second SSID. I have activated parental controls only for my children’s devices. Not for mine, so I can surf normally without time restrictions.

Hello Joerg

How have you set up your parental controls?

For the second SSID, this is useful to be able to remove the Broadcast from the SSID as this is not possible for the “Guest” SSID.

This also allows you to deactivate an SSID during the night independently of the other SSIDs.

Cordialement.

Good morning,

When configuring a second WLAN (for guests, children, etc.), it does not seem possible to define a specific time slot for this secondary WLAN. The activation/deactivation times are defined only for the entire network.

Best regards

Hello, I don’t really understand what’s so complicated?

Do you have an internet box and not the old centro grande router?

If so, here is the link that explains how to activate parental controls (time restriction) for a specific device:

[http://www.swisscom.ch/fr/clients-prives/aide/loesung/controle-parental.html](http://www.swisscom.ch/fr/clients-prives/aide/loesung/controle- parental.html)

I activated the time limit for the children’s iPhones.

It is clear that if we activate the time limitation for a device used together, such as an iPad, this poses a problem. Personally we have not activated a time limit for the iPad but it remains in the living room where we allow children to use it by imposing rules of conduct.

The other variation is to activate the time limitation for the iPad and deactivate it (on/off) for your own use, from e.g. his own phone. With the free internet-box application it’s quite easy (only works if you are at home in your own WiFi network).

Sometimes I have to extend the time limit (WhatsApp requires) for one of the children by 10 minutes and in this case I temporarily deactivate it with the app, then reactivate it.

I don’t tinker with SSIDs, it’s not a good system in my opinion. The guest wifi also I only use it for the guests ;-))

Finally, in my opinion there is no point in hiding SSIDs, whether it’s a hacking question or you’ve set a password that’s substantial or not (or less than 16 characters), hiding the SSID doesn’t change much.

There is also no point in deactivating or turning off the WiFi at night, except to save energy, we will always be watered copiously from neighboring WiFi or a 3G/4G antenna. To avoid this I recommend the north pole…

Also don’t forget that apart from the time limitation you should activate an internet filter. On iOS, children have to make do with K9 which is free and works more or less well (don’t forget to block access to Safari). It’s not perfect, but at least 10 times better than nothing at all.

On Win7/8 I use the integrated Windows parental controls, there too there are better but it’s free, so no excuses…

Good morning,

Thank you for the answers and explanations.

This is exactly how I set up parental controls. Sometimes Wi-Fi access cuts out at the scheduled time, but sometimes kids can still surf after the scheduled time.

This control is therefore not reliable for me.

I have the Internet Box (square, white with black glass and LCD display).

Cordialement.

Ah ok, I didn’t quite understand. In fact, I also noticed that sometimes the connection doesn’t seem to cut off right away, but in general for us it works quite well. In addition, to avoid double management, for Win ⅞ PCs I only use the integrated Windows parental controls for the Web filter but also for the restriction of time slots. The PC freezes at the expected time, so not just the Wifi.

I would like the same thing for the PS4 but I haven’t found anything. But for certain things you have to impose rules of conduct and trust while being vigilant, you have no choice.

Dear Bouby02,

We have not forgotten your request. We are still waiting for a response from the service in question. We thank you very much for your patience.

Hello Bouby02,

Parental control is actually designed to block the internet during a certain time slot. However, the connection may not be terminated in time. This restriction will be removed in a future update. To cut off connections at the desired time, it is necessary to completely deactivate the WLAN using the programmable time slots in parental controls. If the WLAN is reactivated shortly afterwards, devices subject to parental control will no longer be able to surf.

The Internet Box offers 3 SSIDs; one on the 2.4 GHz frequency, another on the 5GHz frequency and the last one is dedicated to visitors. There are no plans to add more.

Hello NathalieSI,

Thank you for this information.

We’ll see in the next update.

Do you know when it’s due?

For the SSIDs, I don’t completely agree with you when you talk about 3 SSID’s. Indeed, the 2.4 GHz one and the 5 GHz one cannot be configured separately, so there are ultimately only 2. (or 4 if you are talking about these 2 SSID’s in each band, unless the visitor SSID is not present in the 5 GHz band).

It’s a shame that you don’t give the possibility like with old Routers to activate several different SSIDs and that you are not going to correct this lack in a future firmware version. However, it is so simple to develop because it is only software, therefore without additional hardware costs…

Kind regards.

Good morning,

Despite the promises of a correction during a next upgrade, still the same parental control problem: the Wi-Fi does not automatically turn off outside the authorized ranges.

Swisscom claims to be very attentive to parents and strict with child protection, parental controls, etc… well that doesn’t seem to be the case because since I reported this bug it almost a year ago and they recognized it, well nothing has changed.

Really very disappointing.

Hello,

Yes, after almost a year and nothing is not great from Swisscom, there is still a little hope because a new firmware will be deployed on Internet boxes this night and next night. Fingers crossed 😉

Hello!

ha ok, a new Firmware. You are well informed 😉

We’ll see if this bug will finally be corrected, otherwise we’ll just have to wait for the next one in…. 1 year?? (laugh)

- I also tried to find the time in the Internet Box Plus, but no menu at first glance indicates it. (You probably have to go to cmd mode via Telnet, like on Cisco)

- The Router should take the time on the network?

- Perhaps the Router just isn’t able to synchronize?

- Unable to manually set the current time?

- Impossible to know the Uptime of the Router?

So lots of unanswered questions and still this damn bug.

Thanks for the feedback.

Cordialement
