Surround sound differences e.g. in SRF News broadcasts

Good day everybody

My setup:

- Swisscom TV Box UHD, via HDMI in AVR, sound set to surround, picture to UHD

- NAD T778 AV receiver with 5.0 setup, image via HDMI to TV

- TV LG OLED55C17

I know that sounds a bit like voodoo. Yesterday I noticed that at 10 to 10 in replay mode in surround sound only the center emits a sound, the front and surround LS remain silent. However, the exact same report on 10 to 10 ran live on the SF Info Channel with perfect surround sound. Later I tested the article on SF Info via replay and the sound was also wrong (at the intro from 10 to 10 there is a weak sound signal with the background music on the front LS, after which they remain silent). It only affects news broadcasts, films in replay send the correct sound.

Is it possible that SRF is currently having a problem with the sound of its own productions or that something is not working correctly with the software of the TV box / the sound playback in replay mode? Could it be that the live contributions are compressed differently than during replay?

I’ve already restarted and checked everything and, as I said, everything is working perfectly with film contributions, other TV channels and other sources. The settings on the AV receiver were not changed during testing; it switches correctly to Dolby Surround.

Has anyone noticed something similar or have an idea what it could be?

@Cowflake

You can try doing a “reset” with an open paper clip on the TV-Box, no data will be deleted.

The hole is at the bottom for the “reset”.

Hello @Cowflake

Uhh please note that you have different soundtracks for SRF1HD and SRF info 😉
The news and many other programs on SRF1 HD come in DD5.1 and the same news on SRF Info then come in DD2.0.
You should be able to see this on your AVR too.

Now, depending on the audio track (on 5.1 or 2.0), your AVR can also use other settings on the AVR depending on the input signal.

Now you just have to look at your AVR to see what it does with a DD2.0 signal and how you can hear it…

I recommend the NAD OSD app for the T778. It costs a few francs, but it works.

The T778 is great, but not easy to set up and use.

@Cowflake What annoys me is that in the morning my TV sometimes only shows snow because the HDMI chain is probably shot. Then there is no silver bullet to get everything running again. Don’t you have the problem?

@5018 Thanks for the tip, I’ve already discovered the OSD app, it’s quite helpful from time to time. I usually use Roon when listening to music. I don’t know about the problem with the snow yet. However, I switch everything on and off separately via the Logitech Harmony macro and all of my HDMI controls are set to “OFF” (That would probably be another thread :-).

I’ve been cursing the disastrous upmix from 2.0 to Dolby Digital 5.1 on SRF 1 and 2 for years.

SRF 1 and SRF 2 broadcast permanently in Dolby Digital 5.1. Also the shows they only produce in 2.0. In some programs they produce a catastrophic upmix to 5.1, which results in a permanent phase shift. Then it sounds really confusing with a surround system. The speaker’s sound should come from the center, but it cannot be located and comes from different directions.

SRF Info broadcasts in 2.0. That’s why the problem doesn’t occur there. With SRF 1 / SRF 2 you can also select the other audio track (for speech) which does not have Dolby Surround. Then the problem is solved.

It’s not clear to me why it’s been like this for so long and why the SRF not only doesn’t recognize it, but is immune when you try to describe it to them (it’s been years now from my side).

The problem is also current with Swisscom Box 5. However, only if you opt for the sound from the TV via SPID. Cable leads back to the surround system. HDMI - connection from the box directly to the TV.
