sound notifications can be set directly in the iPhone settings
Change message notifications on iPhone - Apple Support (MT)
Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics. Do any of the following: Make notifications quieter or louder: Adjust the volume with the slider. Choose a tone or sound: Tap Text Tone, then tap a sound below Alert Tones (or tap Tone Store to download one).

Thanks for your reply. I have already tried this but it doesn’t work. I sent an email on my laptop to myself and I didn’t receive and ‘ping’ on my phone to say an email has come in. Perhaps there is a more in depth setting that needs to be changed?! I always seem to have to go into the app until the emails actually’arrive’. So unless I do this no emails are automatically arriving. Maybe it’s possible somewhere? To change this sort of setting!
Set email notifications on iPhone - Apple Support (MT)
Go to Settings > Apps > Mail.
Tap Notifications, then make sure that Allow Notifications is on.
Tap Customize Notifications, then tap the email account you want to make changes to.
Select the settings you want, like Alerts or Badges. When you turn on Alerts, you have the option to customize your sounds by changing the alert tone or ringtone.
You can set times when you want to allow notifications from the Mail app. See Change notification settings.
To minimize interruptions from notifications throughout the day, you can schedule a notification summary that includes notifications for several apps at once.
Go to Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary.
Turn on Scheduled Summary, then tap Continue.
Schedule times for the notification summary.
Select the apps to include in your notification summary, then tap Add Apps.
To choose when you want notification previews to appear, tap Show Previews, select an option, then tapat the top of the screen
Previews can include things like text (from Messages and Mail) and invitation details (from Calendar). You can override this setting for individual apps.
When you use Focus, it delays the delivery of notifications on iPhone to prevent interruptions. You can schedule a time to receive a summary of the notifications you missed. See Schedule a notification summary.
You can reduce distractions in your day by scheduling your notifications to be delivered as a summary—you choose which notifications to include in the summary and what time you want to receive it.
The notification summary is personalized to you and intelligently ordered by priority, based on your current activity, with the most relevant notifications at the top. The summary is especially useful because it allows you to engage with notifications on your own time. You can take this even further by using Focus to filter notifications while you focus on an activity.
Go to Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary, then turn on Scheduled Summary.
Set a time for your summary to appear. If you want to receive another summary, tap Add Summary.
Select the apps to include in your summary.
Tap A to Z below Apps in Summary, then make sure the apps you want to include in your summary are turned on.
Note: If an app you want to include in your notification summary doesn’t appear in the A to Z list, you may need to turn on Allow Notifications for the app. Go to Settings > Notifications, tap the app, then turn on Allow Notifications. See Change notification settings.

Thanks for that but this is only for the Apple ‘Mail’ app. I have purposely this time not used the Mail app but the Swisscom - Bluewin News and Emails app that Swisscom helpline suggested.
