Internet-Box - R14.2 Beta Firmware

  • Dear community,

    Today I’m happy to announce that the beta version is available for Internet-Box 2, 3 and 4! We look forward to your opinions and suggestions for improvements. Let’s explore this beta together and find out how we can further optimize it.

    You can find the installation instructions in the web portal, under the corresponding Internet box: [Firmware Swisscom devices | Swisscom](https://www.swisscom.ch/de/privatkunden/hilfe/geraet/firmware.html#internetbox=&acc-wlanbox%5Bselected%5D%5B%5D=0&acc-internetbox%5Bselected%5D%5B%5D =1 “https://www.swisscom.ch/de/privatkunden/hilfe/geraet/firmware.html#internetbox=&acc-wlanbox%5bselected%5d%5b%5d=0&acc-internetbox%5bselected%5d%5b%5d=1 ”)

    We would like to thank you in advance for your participation and look forward to your contributions to this thread AND under the following link in the error report form [error report link](https://www.swisscom.ch/de/privatkunden/hilfe/geraet /bugreport-formular.html?campID=SC_bugreport “https://www.swisscom.ch/de/privatkunden/hilfe/geraet/errormelde-formular.html?campid=sc_bugreport”).

    Best regards

    Could be installed directly at a neighbor’s home via the Internet-Box 3 menu without any problems.

    It is important that the power supply is always available until the update is finished.

    @Bergler To do this, the basic operating system from Broadcom (BSP) must be upgraded. This involves a lot of effort and risk, but I can promise you that we are working on it. I can’t tell you whether or when Wireguard will come and it’s not my responsibility. But the path to Wireguard is clear 😉

    A feature that I would very much welcome is the introduction of bridge mode for the public IP. I could imagine that the customer would then be assigned two IPs. Firstly, the public one, which can be connected to a LAN port on the IB via bridge mode, and an additional CGNAT for the IB itself for telephony and TV.

    I know it is very unlikely that this function will ever come and would involve a lot of work.

    @TomatoTec I would be happy about it too, but I can hardly imagine that it will ever happen, I think Swisscom has other priorities that are more beneficial for the “average customer”, I think very few private customers have the need for it a bridge mode (even if it seems like that here in the forum, but it’s not the average customer here, but people like you and me 🙂)

    @NilsL

    I absolutely share your opinion.

    It’s more likely that “the sky will fall on our heads” when Swisscom reintroduces the bridge mode, which was abolished in 2015, on its Internet boxes in the private customer segment. 🙂

    I can’t find this beta version of my IB2, nothing is displayed as described on the SC website.

    My IB2 still has firmware 14.00.52 on it.

    To date I have not received a newer version.

    Let’s see if restarting the IB2 brings me the latest firmware, or can someone from Swisscom who is also a user here install the latest firmware for me?

    I believe that R14.1 was not fully rolled out because there were problems. R14.2 should solve this. A bit unpleasant, but it can happen.

    It would make sense if the web portal indicated that this is a beta version or a release candidate. Expert mode or not.

    Unfortunately, the two messages in the web portal do not indicate your beta version and not every user wants to have a beta version in operation:

    - “New firmware is available. Please check the firmware page.”

    - “New firmware available: 14.20.24”

    @rbisig

    If Swisscom were to stick to the usual international practice in its naming, you are of course right, then the 14.20.24 would actually have to indicate the “still before release status”.

    In reality, 14.20.24 was the release candidate to be rolled out at the beginning of May, was passed again by selected testers and nothing was changed in the firmware afterwards.

    What always confuses me is that Swisscom only declares a firmware version to be an official release very late, namely only when the automatic productive rollout, which is carried out in stages, has already been largely completed.

    In principle, you can assume that Swisscom will never release a real, risky “beta version” for general use for the vast majority of customers, regardless of what is stated on a website somewhere as the name of a firmware version is currently being addressed.

    This version is potentially unstable. Unfortunately there is actually no indication of the beta status and I installed this version last Friday. Yesterday the internet via LAN stopped working. Unfortunately I’m just a few hundred kilometers away from the IB4 and can’t offer any further information. According to people on site, switching it off/on helped.

    If strange problems arise after a firmware update, a cold start usually helps. This does not mean restarting the software, but rather briefly disconnecting the Internet box from the power supply for around 5 seconds.

    In any case, I used this firmware myself for over 15 days without any problems, of course there can always be exceptions.

    I have also activated it for older neighbors in the last few days and no additional restart had to be carried out there.

    I had already performed the cold start after the firmware update on Saturday before the failure occurred on Sunday.

    The problem that manually deleted devices reappear at some point, preferably after a restart, is still not resolved.

    Hi

    The deleted devices no longer appear for me. Maybe (and I never actually recommend this) it can help in this case to do a reset and not import an old config file again. There may be things in there that are causing this. But if necessary. a bit of work if you have named many devices yourself. Many settings come back automatically. But everything without guarantee.

    I’ve never heard of the topic of LAN no longer working and haven’t seen it in any testing. Does this mean that no device that is connected to a LAN port works anymore?
