Disable location services to save battery

  • I took the advice “How to save the battery” from a swisscom email seriously and seriously and deactivated the location services. In the SBB app, however, the option “only activate when using the app”. And immediately the “Easy Ride” application on the post bus didn’t work today, a roundabout kept spinning. Embarrassing, I didn’t have a ticket and instead got a free ride. I think that when Swisscom sends out advice, all the consequences of a free tip should be mentioned and pointed out.

    • Thank you very much for all your answers and helpful tips, which encourage me to use the location services more carefully and to save the battery using other options. 😀

The problem is sometimes also present when the security service is switched on with “Fairtiq” and “EasyRide”, usually in heavily built-up areas or covered areas (bridges, tunnels) because a GPS connection is required.

I also had problems from time to time, e.g. Zurich Kloten and therefore already received a fine, but it was refunded.

When you have VPN turned on, the most you need is 30-40% of the battery life.

Imagine every exception being mentioned. Let’s just take 4 apps:

SBB can no longer determine the start route and destination, Google Maps cannot navigate or determine the location, Google cannot provide location-based suggestions and cannot save visited locations, ** blueTV** cannot be used due to geolocation restrictions imposed by the broadcasters”…

That’s x lines of text - and there are millions of apps.

SBB / EasyRide absolutely needs location services. However, this is also mentioned in the app when starting without location services. The error is then more than clearly formulated: "Please set location access to “Always” in the settings and, if available, activate the “Exact location” option - error code: ER-9081

Technical detail: The location must always be able to be determined in the background, for example to know which route you took while driving (e.g. in the case of Chur-St.Moritz: via Albula or via Landquart-Vereina).

    Greetings Stefan

I achieve the greatest battery savings by turning off my cell phone at night and redirecting calls to the landline.

GPS on or off isn’t everything. The brand, model and built-in processor also have a decisive influence on the battery life. What apps you have installed also plays a role. Unfortunately, there are many rubbish apps that drain the battery. Theoretically you could still reduce the resolution and not use a 120Hz refresh rate, only 60Hz. You also save some money, but… do I want that myself? I use an S24 Ultra, a very expensive device. Doesn’t make sense to “cut” the part so much. I always have everything activated accordingly and still achieve great runtimes.

You can only protect the battery to a limited extent anyway, because over time and the charging cycles the capacity decreases and the running time becomes worse in any case, which is unfortunately normal. If the device is not old, you can easily have it exchanged at various companies. That’s why I don’t think too much about the battery issue.
