VPN no longer works

  • Hello everyone

    I wanted to use the VPN again today. Now I have seen that when I connect to the VPN from the cell phone network, the connection is established successfully, but no data is loaded (web browser). There is also no information about the last connection in the router interface. It worked briefly earlier. Then the last connection was set correctly. But now it doesn’t work again. Same with iPad with different account

    • Found it out. I have configured 2x L2TP accounts and 1x IKEv2. As soon as I configure IKEv2 once, no account works anymore. Assume that the mix no longer works since an update. IKEv2 account deleted and L2TP is running again.

    Hi @stephander2

    I would restart the internet box and see if it works again afterwards.

    If not, set a different password, save it and set the old one again.

    If you use DynDNS, check whether the IP that the name points to is still your current IP (icanhazip.com, nslookup <yourhostname>)

    Unfortunately it doesn’t help, I even switched from internetbox2 to 3. Connection possible, but I can no longer access any pages. Even 192.168.0.1 doesn’t work.

    Unfortunately I am affected by the same problem. IB3, has to use IKEv2 because of Android 13.

    We only had to wait about 1.5 years for IKEv2 (for IB3)…

    My DynDNS name from Swisscom can no longer be found (but I get the message “The DNS name is already in use. Please choose a different name.”).

    If I want to enter a different DynDNS name, I get the error message “The service cannot connect to the dynamic DNS server.”.

    But once again SC has everything fully under control…

    @Andy H Unfortunately, the IB VPN server is a closed book and there are no logs.

    What do you want to access on the home network? If you have a box running 24/7 anyway, just slap WireGuard on it and never look back 😉.

    @Andy H

    WireGuard is one option, the other is Open VPN Server, which can be activated as a package on many NAS, for example on Synology Diskstation, but also on many other devices.

    If you need a different or additional DynDNS, the free DynDNS from NO-IP is really very reliable and can also be tracked directly through the Internet box.

    If you don’t want to pay anything extra for it, you simply receive an email from NO-IP once a month and then have to confirm with 2 clicks that you want to continue using NO-IP-DynDNS. With a little practice this takes about 10 seconds per month 🙂

    @r00t/ @Werner

    Every now and then there is a situation where I want to access devices in the home network.

    Whether the IB3, a NAS or a printer, without wanting to go into detail. NAS and printers hang behind switched sockets.

    Can I charge the costs for additional hardware and half a computer science degree from SC?

    If a store like this (still) has problems with (stable) IKEv2, these are the questions I ask myself.

    I’m unlikely to get any answers from SC on this topic, it’s pretty much the same tragedy as with the SCTV app…

    And why does an end user have to make sure that they can somehow get to their VPN connection?

    SC once managed L2TP - they fail with IKEv2? 🤔

    The days of running boxes @ home just for fun are over - saving electricity and all that 😉

    Now should I buy a Raspi or something else, choose what works for me from 200 operating systems and 400 VPN software providers (just try it out for 2-3 months) and then hope that it works (in the long term)? I used to have the time and desire for such gimmicks - today I would simply like the VPN (and DynDNS) function of an IB3 to simply work and do what it is supposed to do.

    I’m not asking for a time travel machine to be developed… just that what worked before works again now.

    Is that really asking too much?

    Hi @Andy H

    I can understand your frustration, but apart from tips like “set it up again, reset the Internet box, choose a different password” etc., unfortunately we as customers cannot offer you anything in this case.

    Unfortunately, the Internet box doesn’t put out any logs, although IMO it can solve 99% of the problems or at least greatly limit them.

    So it’s just “plug and pray”, unless you deliver client logs + maybe even a traffic capture, which brings us back to studying computer science.

    I’m unlikely to get any answers from SC on this topic, it’s pretty much the same tragedy as with the SCTV app…

    You can try via contact form.

    I would try it out myself, but I haven’t been able to access the IB’s GUI for a long time.

    @r00t

    Shouldn’t the problem with accessing the menu on the Internet box be solved?

    Have you already performed a hardware reset (paper clip)?

    In my environment everyone comes into the menu with the IB ⅔!

    @WalterB I think there is a pre-release version that solves the problem, but I can no longer find the relevant post. 😅

    Don’t know if this has already been rolled out. At least for me, resets are not effective; the GUI no longer works after a few hours.

    🤣

    THAT should be the solution?

    What I just found out: IKEv2 no longer exists as a protocol in IB3…

    Do you want to give me away?

    (FW version 13.01.24/13.01.44/01879)???

    How do I get such old junk? IB3 rebooted itself 3 times this evening… 😤

    EDIT - about 1 hour later…

    After toothpicking and rolling back the config I got FW 13.20.26/13.20.18/01923 and IKEv2 working again. 🤔 🙃

    The only question is how long… why does the toothpick have to be inserted over and over again?
