How to configure IPv6 dual stack on OPNsense

    • Hello everyone,

    now that 6rd is gone from the Swisscom network, I need to figure out how to reconfigure my OPNsense box in order to take advantage of the new simpler setup and return to having access to the Internet6, which has not been working since 6rd was turned off last December.

    BTW, a little warning about this major change, at least here on the community forums, would have helped, dear Swisscom!

    Has anyone successfully configured IPv6 dual stack on OPNsense or pFsense?

    I find the different configuration options quite confusing, and while I have been successfully using DHCPv6 in parallel with DHCPv4, and see the leases on my /56 subnet assigned fine, I do NOT see any IPv6 traffic flowing thru the inbound interface.

    I have spent just a little time doing a quick test or two, but wanted to see if the IPv6 gurus on this forum can provide some guidance…

    Turns out that something weird is happening with OPNsense and IPv6 in my specific setup, and for other people as well.

    Some have fixed the issue by resetting their OPNsense to factory settings, and then reconfiguring the box.

    In my specific case, the IPv6 WAN interface would not get an address, and things would simply not work.

    From reading the OPNsense forum, I found that other people were able to solve the IPv6 issue WAN interface issue by launching a script from the CLI as root:

    /usr/local/etc/rc.configure_interface wan

    After issuing this command, things all of a sudden work well.

    Other than needing to do this after each reboot, things work as expected. Maybe if I would also reset the box to factory settings and reconfigure it again I would not need this command, but I very rarely need to restart the OPNsense box anyway.

    Hi @lucaberta could you please share how you configured the WAN interface? Are you requesting the IPV6 using DHCPv6?

    for IPv4 I need to pass this option in the Lease requirements (dhcp-class-identifier “100008,0001,opnsense”) but any particular option for the DHCPv6 section?
