tv box standby mode

  • Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding how TV Box standby mode works.

The majority of electronic devices, when they start up after being turned off/unplugged, spontaneously go into standby mode.

But this is not the case for TV Boxes, which remain active. (unless it’s a bug for me, but I don’t think so)

Normally I would say that it is not more disturbing than that. Either we do not turn them off (we leave them on standby), or if we turn them off (on vacation for example), we are present when we turn them back on and we can therefore put them on standby spontaneously.

Where it becomes annoying in my opinion is in the event of a power outage. Which could well happen this winter in the event of a shortage.

Let’s say there is an outage during the night, when restarting the Box will activate and remain active for several hours. Which goes against the energy savings that we are asked to make.

So yes, you just have to turn off the Box in the evening, but you will still have to think about it every evening.

But the problem remains if the outage occurs during the day when we are not at home.

Shouldn’t Swisscom review the operation of TV Boxes in this context so that they go into standby mode when they turn on?

I am curious to have your opinions and suggestions on this subject.

    A+

    • Leuleuza49 likes that.
    • Indeed this would have been a solution if the box had been a TV-Box 5 and the television had a USB socket.

The TV-Box5 is the first in the series with a standard USB power supply.

    Hello @Ludov

Indeed, if you turn off a box in standby and turn it back on, it starts in normal (active) mode. If this happens following a power outage it will go back to standby after 4 hours (default behavior). We must still weigh up the number of times users would have to wait without a signal when switching on and the number of power outages we have during the year.

Good evening DanielD. I am of the same opinion as Ludov regarding the behavior of the box after the power returns. This is also difficult to understand with or without an energy problem.

As you yourself point out, power outages are not numerous in Switzerland. So I don’t really see what the problem is if you have to wait a little longer before getting a start-up signal if this happens occasionally. By default it should not turn on automatically, it should be an option to enable.

Finally, it is also annoying when you have a controllable Smart Switch type socket. All my equipment connected to the TV is on a socket of this type. When I activate it I don’t necessarily want the box to turn on but there is no way to avoid that…

    Hello @Stithigo16

We can forget about the behavior in the event of a power outage, it is so rare.

The behavior problem with the Smart Switch is a good argument. In fact the IP2000 has a switch, but the IP1800 does not and this does not cut off the power supply. In your configuration this requires having the box on a separate channel to have a scenario with or without the box. But I can also turn the argument around 😉 just put the box on standby after starting it if you are not using it.

If you use a distribution strip with a switch, you must choose one with an individual switch per socket to avoid this difficulty.

For the majority of users, having more than 30 seconds for the box to start and the TV not displaying anything just after starting will be considered a failure, because it is not a logical operation.

It is more and more common to have automation/home automation/smart home or whatever the name is.

When I go to bed it cuts the power to the 10 devices that would otherwise be on standby all night for nothing (or when I’m not at home).

The only one not smart enough to have an option and choose the behavior in case of power failure is the Swisscom TV box.
This is not normal, especially since technically it must be feasible (even if it means turning on the box entirely if necessary and putting it on stand-by immediately afterwards, keeping the last active/stand-by state so as to know the necessary state in the event of a power outage).

Something that almost all other producers have managed to do, except Swisscom!

We have the right to ask for the functionality, even if it will never happen (at least without some additional external pressure).

thank you for this relevant comment 😁

please also specify which TV-Box de Swisscom is used and its connection mode (router, WLAN-Box, other)

Recent models: Swisscom Box 21 (IP1800), Swisscom Box (IP2000), Apple TV 4K

    Older models: TV-Box UHD (IP1400), TV-Box HD (IP1200)

Note: Model TV-Box HD IP1200 will be replaced free of charge by the end of the year

“Affected customers will be contacted by email in the coming weeks. They can take their old TV-Box (HD) to the nearest Swisscom Shop and will be offered a new Swisscom Box 21 worth CHF 99. The subscription Internet will thus be extended by 12 months.”
