Yes, that’s possible - but only if you’re not (yet) on XGS-PON (10Gbit) fiber.

Alternatively, there are fiber optic extension kits that you (electrician) can pull into existing pipes and then set a new OTO in the living room

My colleague would like to switch from DSL to fiber optic, but still operate the IB in the living room (OTO box is in the distribution box, from the distribution box to the living room = copper). Unfortunately, the first attempts failed. While looking for the reason, one of the things I read here is “Yes, that’s possible - but only if you’re not (yet) on XGS-PON (10Gbit) fiber.”

• What is crucial here? What speed is subscribed to (1 Gbit/s) or what is possible according to www.swisscom.ch/checker (10 Gbit/s)?

Thanks for the prompt reply @hed. If the checker shows 10 Gbit/s, as in our case, is there also a (cost-effective) variant with a media converter or is this option completely eliminated and only the two variants remain

Or pull a fiberglass extension.

As a rule, there is still space in the pipe and there are RJ45 glass combination sockets so you can’t see them.

And the cable costs less than the converter depending on the length.

You can easily lay glass even in a rented apartment.

Or you can put the IB in the distribution cabinet and connect everything with copper from there. This is also possible in a rented apartment. You can then switch off the IB’s WiFi and place a WB in a location that is optimal for radio technology.

@all Thanks for your valuable input! We have now installed the IB in the distribution box and go into the living room via the existing copper cabling. If the speed is not enough, my colleague can still pull fiber optics into the tool center. Edit: Or install a WLAN-Box.

Which speed shouldn’t be enough? Except for WiFi, the speed is the same no matter where the IB is located. And if the performance of the WLAN is not sufficient, you don’t necessarily have to relocate the IB > see post #10. Of course, the fewest resources (electronics and energy) are required if the IB is positioned optimally in terms of radio technology and can therefore do without a WB.

@hed With the current subscription (1 Gbit/s) there is certainly no bottleneck on the LAN side. But assuming he switches to 10 Gbit/s - Ethernet is usually designed for 1 Gbit/s or am I mistaken? Of course, provided that the end device also supports 10 Gbit/s.

With Cat7 Ethernet cabling, Ethernet goes up to 10 Gbit/s without restrictions. But for this you also need appropriate end devices and Ethernet switches for 10 Gbit/s. Both are still very expensive and use a lot of energy. In addition, 10 Gbit/s is unnecessary in private households; even in companies with many power users, only 1 Gbit/s is usually used in the access area and nothing will change that quickly.
