Mobile ID no longer works

  • Hello everyone

Mobile ID has stopped working for some time. Some time ago I ordered a new SIM card, activated Mobile ID and successfully logged in to the company portal.

But suddenly the popup no longer appears. You can test the cell phone on the Swisscom website: The website says Mobile ID is activated, but when I want to test it I only get the following text:

“Your Mobile ID could not be contacted (Timeout) or the user canceled the process (Cancel). Please try again.”

I didn’t change my cell phone or subscription, just an OS update to Android 8.1.0 (but it didn’t work before that, as far as I know).

Does anyone have the same problem? Or can someone help me?

    Thank you very much

    Greetings Andi

    • Order a new SIM card.

You could perhaps test the card in another device first. If you don’t have one, the shop will help you.

I submitted an inquiry at https://www.mobileid.ch/de. The answer was that if you switch to the latest Android version, you may need to reboot every now and then so that MobileID works again. That helped for me… that means your tip would probably have helped too.

    7 months later

    Hello,

I switched from a mobile with Android One Oreo 8.1 to a Nokia 7 Plus (also Android One Oreo 8.1). Swisscom pre-paid SIM card less than 2 months old.

-> Unfortunately same problem, no popup!, even though the SIM Toolkit recognized the request (sound turned on in the SIM Toolkit app).

Reset to factory settings, then everything worked for a few hours. I don’t know whether it was because of the hours or other apps that I installed after the reset. Now it doesn’t work again!!

Does anyone have a solution for this or should I replace the new SIM card?

Was able to successfully test the new Mobile ID-capable SIM card with “Test Mobile ID” at:

    https://www.swisscom.ch/de/privatkunden/mobile/zusatzdienste/mobileid.html

    be tested?

If yes, the Mobile ID is working. If no, there is a problem with the SIM card OR the cell phone. The very frequently used Android operating system in particular is very weak in Mobile ID support (technically more precise “SIM Application Toolkit” support => applications that run on the SIM card; technically more precise: USIM application of the SIM card). If an Android operating system update comes, “SIM Application Toolkit” applications such as Mobile ID suddenly no longer work…

An asymmetric cryptosystem is used for Mobile ID:

    https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asymmetrisches_Kryptosystem

As far as I know, the new public (RSA) key of the new SIM card would have to be stored in the company portal. Please check with the company’s IT department whether this step is necessary and how to do it.

    [http://documents.swisscom.com/product/1000131-Mobile\_ID/Documents/Factsheets/Fact\_Sheet-Mobile\_ID-de.pdf](http://documents.swisscom.com/product/1000131- Mobile_ID/Documents/Factsheets/Fact_Sheet-Mobile_ID-de.pdf)

The private (RSA) key of the old SIM card cannot be read. And thus transferred to the new SIM card. This is the purpose of a SIM card, which is basically nothing other than a very compact HSM:

    [https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware Security Module](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware Security Module)

The purpose of an HSM is to store the private key securely and prevent the private key from being read at all costs.

    Hello GrandDixence,

I think I found the problem on the Nokia 7 Plus dual SIM “by chance” through “trial & error” and hope to help others too!

During the (unfortunately multiple) “reinstallation” I always had 2 SIM cards in it, a pre-paid Swisscom SIM (i.e. with Mobile ID certificates etc) and a second foreign SIM card.

-> As soon as I put the second (foreign) SIM card in the Android menu, the “Mobile ID pop-up” no longer appears. Probably a bug in the SIM toolkit?

-> Maybe someone was able to understand this behavior? (didn’t google it)

Now I will do a final “reinstallation” with only the SC SIM and will report how it behaves when I insert the second foreign SIM after the complete installation with all apps and settings.

    Best regards, user-me.
