Weak signal.

Hi there!

So we got an Infinty connection at home. The cable connections work great (HDTV and Pc).

The problem is the wireless. We have the Motorola Netopia Router 7347 84.

I get no connection 5 meters away from the router, and no connection through

a wall to our bedroom (2 meters with thin wall). We have no wireless phones.

So here is what i have made to try to fix this.

I changed to Wifi channel to the least used in my area (did a scan with Vistumbler). No difference.

Moved the Router to the widest room with no interference. No difference.

Even tried the a cardboard wrapped in aluminum foil to strengthen the signal. No difference.

The old Router for the Standard package had excellent strength and we have not purchased any wireless devices since then. Could use it in the whole apartment and on the balcony.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well,

there's good news and bad news, as usual.

I'll start with the good ones:

Your router allows for transmission power adjustments as per its datasheet HERE

End of good news. On to the bad:

The router is most likely set to full power by default. See page 339 for the Netopia Sftware User Guide
There is of course the possibility that Swisscom has turned this down by default on each new router
There's virtually no way of tampering with this even via CLi with Swisscom's current firmware

I sympathise with your problem and I think A LOT of those issues would be resolved if Swisscom was more forthcoming with information on its network/devices/parameters and of course, if they didn't use locked device that are remotely tampered with in the name of simplicity and easier management.Best thing to do, either get a cheap wireless router and plug it in one of the LAN ports of the Netopia or even better, replace the Netopia altogether! (Although if you use IPTV it will be very tricky as Swisscom will only support their own boxes).Good luck either way

Hi there!

Thanks for sharing the good and the bad news. I agree that its really annoying that they lock so many features out. Even WPA2 security. Had to fix that myself the other way.

And you are quite sure that we cant change the Power parameters?

Well,

Swisscom has those routers locked down more securely than Apple does with its iStuff.

You could flush the firmware and use an older version (if you can find it) but this will surely invalidate any warranties etc.

For the sake of 50 francs or so, just get a Wireless Router and plug it into a LAN port.
