Managed switch requirements

Hello everyone

Since I will be ordering Swisscom TV soon and am currently upgrading my network, I am looking for a suitable switch.
Requirements for the switch are:

24P, Gigabit, Vlan.

Now my question is, what exactly does the switch have to be able to do for Swisscom TV to run? Is IGMPv2 enough or does it have to be v3? Unfortunately, on most cheaper switches you will only find IGMPv2 and not v3.

Does the switch have to be able to do anything else?

The TP-SG3424 immediately comes to mind, but the HP 1910 could also fit.

IGMPv2 is sufficient in the home network.

It is optimal if the switch still supports DSCP QoS.

According to the specifications and its configuration options, the TP Link definitely fits. But I can’t tell you whether this works properly in reality. It depends on whether TP Link has implemented IGMP snooping correctly.

Otherwise it’s just bad luck and you’ll have to use a simple switch like the Netgear GS105E in between.

I think I’ll try the TP Link. In terms of price, it would be one of the cheapest 24Ps and it also makes a good impression in terms of functionality.

Otherwise the Cisco SG200-26 would have been an option for me because of the 26 port, 24 port could be tight, if a second server or a NAS were to come along I would have at least had a reserve. But when I see that it costs almost 100 more, I can always buy a small switch in an emergency.

I have now decided on the HP V1910-24G and I am very happy that I took it.
The configuration options are huge. Unfortunately, you have to do a lot of things via the CLI, but that’s okay since you don’t configure it every day.

Swisscom TV has been in operation for me since today and runs without any problems via the switch. The rest of the network will not be flooded. Even if I also have 900Mbit/s. There are no freezes, even with two streams.

By the way, I use an Intel Atom board as a router with openWRT x86. The system achieves 900Mbit/s via a LAN port. WAN - LAN (Vlans) and is therefore more than future-oriented.

Since I have a UPCCC Anschluss as my main connection, the config wasn’t that easy (Multiwan, firewall, etc.), but after a few tries it now works.

The TV box simply has to be routed via the DSL Anschluss and an igmpproxy has to be running for the whole thing to work.

If anyone wants to use an openWRT router for SCTV and has problems with the config, I would be happy to try to help.

I now also have an HP Procurve V1910-48G at home and the two Swisscom TV run without any problems (with IGMP Snooping V3) via the switch. Also in addition to wireless, Sonos, web streaming, video via NAS etc. Works perfectly, easy to configure.

I’ve been using the switch for almost a year now and it runs perfectly.

I don’t think it’s ever been restarted since it’s been in the rack (>200T runtime).

I have now configured several VLANs, MAC based Vlan assignment, etc etc.

I also really like the ability to monitor each port individually using SNMP.

A good piece of hardware for the price 😉

Congratulations on the good choice. The 1910 series from HP is really great, there is a suitable model in the series for pretty much every desired number of ports and with/without PoE, and the Comware operating system from formerly 3com is also great. What’s also really cool is that the switches can handle static Layer 3 routing (IPv4 and IPv6!!) with considerable throughput. Real enterprise feeling at a SOHO price:smileywink:
