Ethernet Problem

  • About four weeks ago I received our new HP Pavilion 15-ab060nz notebook. Unfortunately, I discovered that the Ethernet connection doesn’t work! I changed the cable several times, but nothing helped. According to HP support, the latest driver for the network card is also installed. (Realtek PCle FE Family Controller). According to Swisscom support, our Internet-Box plus (via fiber optic) is up to date. I tested the notebook in our shop with a DSL 80000 subscription and a Netopia 7357-84 router, and the network connection works without any problems. I also tested Anschluss on a Cablecom and there was no problem here either. Next step test at Anschluss with the same modem as our home and the problem occurs again. Next test on Anschluss with subscription DSL Start 2000+ and router Centro piccolo, there is no problem here either.

The problem does not occur on a new Anschluss with a Centro Business modem.

Strangely enough, the same problem occurs with a colleague of mine (same Internet box but via copper) with a Compac notebook three months old (with the same network card). Thanks to a tip from a PC colleague, I was able to narrow down the error a little further. If you set the speed of the network card to 100 MHz half duplex, the connection works. Now I’m starting to think it’s our internet box! If I already have a new notebook, I would like to be able to use the full performance.

It’s not the network driver, but rather your hardware/firmware of your Ethernet interface 100 MBit/s. The Centro (Picolo, Grande and Business) and the router Netopia 7357-84 have a 100 Mbit/s Ethernet interface, so the connection works smoothly there too.

Please read my previous post again carefully with the alternative of the switch.

I sometimes have problems connecting to 100 Mbit/s Ethernet interfaces because I have a 1Gbit/s Ethernet interface in my notebook. I then have to switch to 100 Mbit/s duplex for that to work.

You can see it’s not a driver problem, I have an Intel® 82579LM Gigabit Ethernet interface, which is today’s standard. (HP ProBook 6570b)

    Hello MR,

I think it’s more to do with your cable or Ethernet interface. Do you connect directly to the router with a cable or via a house installation (wireless socket)? If necessary, configure properties on a lan connection and set the link speed of Auto Negation to 1Gbits Duplex if your network card supports it. Otherwise, like the previous speaker, set it to 100 Mbit/s Duplex.

According to HP, your laptop only supports 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet LAN.

What kind of operating system do you use?

Switch the network adapter from automatic negotiation to 100Mbit/s full duplex.

    Directions:

Open “Network and Sharing Center” in Control Panel. In the left pane open “Change adapter settings” (Win7/Win8) or “Manage network connections” (Vista), click on your [LAN connection] on the right, go to “Properties” and under the “Network” tab click click the “Configure” button. Under the “Advanced” tab, find “Transmission rate and duplex mode”, highlight the entry and select the following under “Value”:

    • 100MBit/s full duplex

Depending on the network card driver, there may be a higher or lower frame value. In full duplex mode, the controller can transmit and receive network data simultaneously.

The problem is with your network card (100Mbit/s Ethernet interface) it cannot negotiate an automatic connection speed with the Internet Box (1Gbit/s Ethernet interface). It’s best to connect the notebook via WLAN if it’s not possible via a network cable or, if possible, get a switch .html) maybe that worked. You have 14 days to return the item.

P.S. Who sells a notebook with a 100Mbit/s Ethernet interface these days when the entire network environment is 1Gbit/s? That used to be standard 10 years ago!!!!

The non-technical customer has to deal with the problem again.

If you switch to Windows 10, you won’t solve your problem with the network connection, it’s a hardware problem with your network card on the notebook. See my previous post ->Solution

We have an Imac and no matter what I do, I always get the answer that there is no cable plugged in, even though it is the brand new Gigabyte cable with a new Internet box. I’ve already tried cables via the different ports. How do I get this working? WiFi already works

Is the Ethernet Anschluss set to active on the iMac?

What does it say in the system settings “Open Network” at the top right?

With the old cable (also 1G) the airport works again and tells the internet box that it is connected. We just can’t get internet on the Imac via this cable yet, so we’ll have to keep looking
