Test actual line speed

Dear members,

Here’s how you can test the actual speed of your line.

To test the speed of your Internet connection, there are several sites where you can get different results, so you should consider the points below. Additionally, we only recommend the following link.

  • Check that only 1 computer is connected to the DSL router and by Ethernet cable (Wireless connection and multiple connected devices influence the actual speed) - preferably use the cable supplied with the original packaging.
  • Be sure to deactivate your protections (Antivirus and Firewall) which can also influence the speed. Preferably start your computer in “Safe Mode” (Windows only).
  • If you do not have the option to start in “Safe Mode”, be sure to completely exit all programs that connect to the Internet (MSN Messenger, Skype, Peer to Peer sharing programs, etc.).
  • Only open the browser you will use (Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.).

Other physical details to check:

  • The cabling between the router and the telephone socket (no extension cord and the filters must be properly installed according to the instructions)

Start the test:

  • Open your internet browser
  • Enter the address http://hsi.bluewin.ch/speedtest/ (your JAVA plugin must be up to date)
  • Select and complete the requested information
  • Start the test

If this speed does not correspond to your subscription, you can contact Swisscom for possible intervention.

Remember that Swisscom provides maximum speeds. To find out the speed available for your connection, take the test here.

Thank you for reading and see you soon!

You can also boot into safe mode with a Mac.

You must press the Shift key as soon as you hear the start dong and keep this key pressed until a progress bar is displayed under the Apple logo.

However, unlike Windows, Mac OSx starts much slower in Safe Mode than in Normal Mode so be patient.

But this is the best way to be sure of the speed test result
