OnePlus 8 Pro vs. Galaxy S20 Ultra

  • Hello dear people

I want to buy a new smartphone and am currently leaning between the S20 Ultra and OnePlus 8 Pro.

Does anyone have experience and can give me a tip?

I’ve only had Samsung devices my whole life and I value a good display.

    Hello @Seisipri94

I have an opinion about the two devices - but experiences will probably be difficult (there will be few people who have both devices at home 😉). So the display is particularly important to you - but what does a “good display” mean to you? Resolution? Color fastness? HDR support? Refresh rate? Size? Setting options? Resistance to external influences? Oversubscription (or oversaturation)? Edge?

Both basically have a good display (along with a few hardware problems with the 8, according to forum reports)

    And by the way:

Even if the homepage looks horrible 😉 - you will find good information there.

So I’m not a technology expert, but if I’m going to spend that much, I’d like to have the best display on the market.

Anyway, thanks for the links 🙂

I know that the S20 on the European market uses a different processor, but I’ve also seen in technology tests that it’s not as much worse as many claim.

Apart from the display, the sound and camera are important to me.

I can’t comment on the sound - I have a mixed relationship with it anyway. When it comes to the camera (and questions in general), my answer today is that it’s also a matter of taste. Both models do a good job - but they differ in terms of workmanship. And the OnePlus seems to represent (and record) more “realistically” than Samsung. But whether this is really what customers want is another question. But you can find good comparisons online - just take a look at them. Then you’ll get a good feel for it (even if you compare the camera, for example).

    but there are others too.

Thank you very much for your comment.

When do you expect a price reduction for Samsung Galaxy devices? According to my information, they are not selling so well at the moment and there is currently a promotion going on to get free Galaxy Buds. But if I buy it now and it’s significantly cheaper next month, that would be a hassle.

Absolutely no plan 😉! It would also be extremely dubious if I expressed any personal assessment here. But I can recommend that you stop looking for offers after your purchase - that’s just not good 😉. Then enjoy what you have and enjoy it. With the rest you are just sabotaging yourself 😉.

    I understand 🙂

But I just read something very striking: the OnePlus 8 Pro supports 120Hz at QHD resolution but the S20 Ultra doesn’t? Isn’t that a big disadvantage?

Or can you set the device to automatically switch to QHD as soon as you watch videos, for example?

    @Seisipri94

No, that is absolutely negligible. If you see a difference, if any, it is minimal. There are limits to the human eye. An update from Samsung will soon follow so that you can also enjoy the 120 Hz display in full resolution.

I have now decided on the S20 Ultra. Somehow I couldn’t turn my back on Samsung. I hope you won’t be surprised by the size of the device. But so far I have always been very satisfied with Samsung.

Yes, if you’ve always had Samsung smartphones, you’ll be able to use the Ultra straight away. As long as you can handle the size of the 6.9-inch display, in my opinion you can’t go wrong with the S20 Ultra.

The human eye can only resolve QHD from a screen size of around 24 inches.

Using QHD on smaller screens doesn’t achieve anything apart from marketing nonsense. But as long as there are consumers who fall for it, the manufacturer has done everything right.

And if you believe in it hard enough, you can see a difference between 100 and 120 megapixels on a Handycam.

And the madness will continue with 8k, 16k, 32k resolution on 6 inch screens and everyone will happily join in…

I assumed that the human eye would detect differences at resolutions up to 600ppi?

And I definitely think that there is a difference between 60 Hz and 120 Hz? But I’m also aware that a lot of it is just marketing. Keyword Space Zoom 100x on the Ultra S20.
