DNS server does not exist or is incorrect

I have Swisscom wireless internet and use it as my network. While my devices say they are connected to the network, I am unable to access the internet. Windows diagnostics says that the DNS server does not exist or is incorrect. This happens sporadically, mostly on the weekend but it happened this morning at about 6am. I have reset the router, and restarted my pc but this does not work. The problem fixes itself eventually but I don't think this is acceptable.

Similar problem here. It appears the router is not passing the DNS to the devices via DHCP. I am using the Pirelli BBS Centro Grande Router.

I have the same problems, but only on newer systems (I run Linux and Android systems;

my old Galaxy S phone running Froyo has no problems, while my new systems running

KitKat fail to reach Google at least 3 times out of 4). It is strictly an issue of DNS

there is no problem if you enter the numeric IP -- not that this helps in practice 😉

Because it does not arise on my older systems, which support only IPv4 and not IPv6,

I would say that the problems are connected to the move from IPv4 to IPv6 addresses.

You can resolve the problems by forcing the use of DNS servers other than the

Swisscom DNS servers, such as the Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 4.4.4.4),

although that is harder to do with Android-based tablets...

As other posters noted, however, this is simply not acceptable -- I do not understand

what Swisscom is doing...

strange.... with my ios, windows and mac devices, no issues.

so I would search on your kit kat crunchy device first.

Hello again,

The DNS problem may be due to the DSL modem/router combined with the Swisscom DNS servers,

not just to the Swisscom DNS servers themselves.

I have the standard-issue Pirelli router that Swisscom provides/provided with its Internet

package; that is a very old piece of hardware that does not seem to be maintained

(I have not found any BIOS upgrades for it).

It fails very predictably with the Swisscom DNS servers, on all my desktops and laptops

(running various Linux distros and one running Windows 7) and Android Jelly Bean and

KitKat devices, whereas none of these platforms show any problems when I switch

to the Google DNS servers.

I do not have access to a suitable DLS modem of modern make to test that conjecture,

but the web is full of reports about problems of all kinds with that Pirelli router,

so it may be worth testing. Perhaps Swisscom should simply switch to a more

modern model, one that is kept up to date by its manufacturer

-- and perhaps I should just buy my own instead 😉
