iPhone SMS messages hacked

Hello everyone.

I have fallen victim to a scammer who stole over CHF 3,000 worth of virtual Items from my Steam account.

The scammer managed to do this by changing my two factor authenticator to his own phone.

The interesting part is that the only way for a person to change this number, is to access a code that is sent via SMS. I had recieved this SMS to my Swisscom number on 10.4.2024, but I only opened the message today 19.04.2024.

How could have the scammer accessed this code? I do not have any other devices linked with my Apple Id,

I went trough my Swisscom account but I did not see any notifications about my number being added to another device.

Oh no, this sucks! Did you already contact Steam?

Unfortunately, Steam allows verification by email, in case you “lost” or don’t have access to your phone anymore:

So it is possible to circumvent the SMS-codes. 😞

Hi R00T,

This means that they should have had access to my email. But my email recent log-in history does not have any log-in attempts from any other place during this time.

If your Steam account has been hacked, it has absolutely nothing to do with Swisscom. You need to address the issue directly with Steam’s support team. The two-step authentication codes you receive, which you’ve likely activated via SMS, do not come from Swisscom but from the game platform. On this Steam platform, there are plenty of scammers; if you’re not diligent in handling emails from them, it’s easy to get hacked.

I understand what you are saying. However, the only way for them to have been able to do this, is to access my SMS messages.
