Traffic shaping for newsgroups

Starting this week, any newsgroup downloads have become very slow for me (<300kb/s). I tried the same thing but through a VPN and the speed is much better. This gives me the impression that Swisscom is using some sort of traffic shaping for newsgroup traffic.

I phoned up customer support to try and find out more about this, but they insisted that there is no traffic shaping and that it must be a server problem instead. I find this hard to believe given that the same thing works fine when going through a VPN.

Has anyone else experienced this? I’d be interested in learning more about the policy. Previous ISPs have at least given proper info to look at (e.g. https://my.virginmedia.com/traffic-management/traffic-management-policy-30Mb-or-higher.html )

Hi,

I use newsgroups frequently and I get the max speed my newsgroup provider can offer (40MB/s).

Try to add more “connections” if youre still having the same problem, like Newsleecher for example gives you the option to add multiple connections to help with the speed.

I don’t think that more connections would solve the issue since that was consistent between using a VPN and not.

Regardless, speeds seem to be back to usual the past few weeks, so I’m not sure if it was something temporary or not. I’m still quite confused what the problem was, but I guess it doesn’t matter too much now…
