Youtube app jerks

Hello together

Unfortunately, I can’t pinpoint the exact time, but I’ve been having problems with the YouTube app for a few weeks now.

I know it’s a recurring topic here. I have searched the forum.

What confuses me

  • Nothing has been changed on the hardware (TV, TV box, etc.)
  • Nothing on the network has been changed (router, switch, etc.)

There was a time when I didn’t have the problem

The television is a Philipps Smart TV.

When I switch off the TV box and use the TV’s YouTube app, there is no jerking. Everything runs perfectly.

The TV is connected to the WiFi.

I then checked the resolution of the films in the Swisscom YouTube app when streaming and noticed that as soon as more than 720p is requested, the jerks start. I had previously set the resolution in YouTube to automatic. This means that it always tries to provide the best resolution.

I now suspect that Swisscom TV is no longer providing enough bandwidth for some reason. After all, it used to work. In any case, the WLan is not weakening.

Can someone help me with this? I would like to continue using everything from the TV box.

Many thanks in advance for your support.

Unfortunately, you have not specified how the Bluewin TV box is connected to the data network. If it is connected via WLAN like the TV, then connect the TV box directly to the router with an Ethernet cable and see if it works better.

“Nothing has changed” is almost never the case with WLAN, your neighbours are already causing changes, such as overlapping channels or other interference in the network.

What kind of TV box do you have exactly, i.e. which model?

What kind of router (Internet box) do you have?

What does the TV box show in the settings for WLAN signal strength (how many bars)?

Can you test the whole thing via cable, cable is always better for the TV box than WLAN

The TV box only has a 5 GHz WLAN module, if something is not working well on the 5 GHz WLAN or the range is not sufficient, it may be that the 5 GHz connection to the TV box is weak, but the TV itself still gets enough signal with the 2.4 GHz band

Your Internet box may have fallen onto a non-DFS channel, check the router settings to see if channel 100 is being used there or something lower, you can try manually setting it to 100 (changeover can take up to 10 minutes) and then test again

What does the system menu on the TV box show you, see example picture below.

Maybe you can try under Settings -> Video and Audio -> Reactivate image quality for apps if not already done or reactivate again. To do this, deactivate -> save -> ok

and change it back again, i.e. Activate -> Save -> ok

…and also set the frame rate adjustment to “Not seamless” in the Google settings of the TV box under Display, otherwise the frame rate adjustment to the content of the apps under AoT will not work at all.

And whether this actually solves the YouTube problem of the Swisscom TV boxes under the AoT firmware is also still an open question, but as a current test you can at least give it a try.

              Thanks for your thoughts.

Sorry for my oversight. Of course the box is connected to the Ethernet socket.

I only mentioned WLan in connection with the TV. Because I did a comparative test.

                  Good question.

I logged in to “Google” myself when I started the new Android version, is that why these settings are now available?

@RomanE may be able to say something about this.

From the looks of it, you have the UHD TV box with a white cover. So not with Google settings, and also no picture quality possible with apps setting. This box will no longer be available.

Very well. Thank you all for having your say.

There doesn’t seem to be a solution. Since it used to work very well, I guess I can’t blame my outdated TV box.

But simply having to buy a new one to make it work better is out of the question.

Then I’ll see how I can solve the volume problem with the remote controls.

I switch the TV and TV box with the TVB’s synchronised remote control. If I now only switch on the TV with the TV remote control and leave the TVB switched off, the volume is not correct.

I could live with the fact that I have both remote controls lying around. The glaring difference in volume is the troublesome point.

                  Best regards

The glaring difference in volume is the troublesome part.

I don’t think this is a Swisscom problem. Both devices have their own volume control and this may be “too far apart”.
In this case, I would simply reduce the volume on the TV slightly with the TV remote control, switch off the TV and then increase the volume on the TV box slightly with the BOX remote control. Then switch the TV on again with the TV remote control. The volume on the TV for TV apps and the volume with the box should then be slightly equalised. The procedure can be repeated to achieve a more balanced volume behaviour of both streams.

I then checked the resolution of the films in the Swisscom YouTube app when streaming and noticed that as soon as more than 720p is requested, the jerks start.

Can you check the resolution at which the TV displays the picture smoothly with its YouTube app? Is it higher than 720p?

If not, you can manually set the YouTube resolution on the TV box to the same resolution. If the resolution on the TV is higher, there really is a problem.

Even if you’ve done it before: I would disconnect everything from the TV box to the router from the power supply for a few minutes and then switch it on again from the router. Wait long enough for the router to receive the signal properly again. Only then switch on the TV box and the TV again. Check the quality of the data network cable to the TV box (no kinks, too tight radii and no damage?) Possibly also unplug this cable while all devices are switched off and plug it back in cleanly. Caution: Do NOT unplug the cable that connects the router to the house connection!

The volume problem should be solvable in my opinion.

Carry out or set the following on the UHD TV box:
                      - Switch off HDMI-CEC setting completely
                      - Audio setting on TV box to Stereo TruVolume
                      - on the TV box: Pair remote control with TV set, if already switched on, first delete once and then pair again with the TV set. By activating this OneRemote function, the volume of the TV box is then set to maximum and the Swisscom remote control no longer adjusts the volume on the TV box, but directly on the TV set via IR. It then no longer matters whether you change the volume with the Swisscom remote control or the TV set remote control, because both remote controls are then only used to control the volume of the TV set directly.
