TV box (UHD) to HDMI matrix -> no picture+sound

  • Hello everyone
Since I have been running my TV box (UHD) via an HDMI matrix (Aten VM0808HA ), I can no longer get a picture on the display. The message “one moment please” after a reset is still visible, after that the picture is black. My assumption is therefore that there is an HDCP conflict. The only strange thing is that the picture on the BluRay player (also connected to the matrix) works perfectly.

Does anyone have any idea how I can solve the problem?

    Best regards

When I still had a Swisscom TV box (UHD), I had to set the input port for the TV box to HDCP 1.4 on the matrix (also VM0808HA):

The display was an older Samsung FullHD monitor. They worked quite well together at the time.

I had the EDID settings set to Port1 mode, but this was primarily because of displays with different resolutions. Not sure if this is relevant for this case.

And what kind of device/TV/beamer is connected to your HDMI matrix?
What I can’t recommend is using an HDMI matrix that uses HDCP 2.2 for the TV box and then “only” HDCP 1.4 for the TV or a device without HDCP at all.

You can connect the TV box directly to the TV and check whether you get picture and sound this way, if so, then you have a problem with your HDCP chain at home.

Thank you for your answer. I assume the same. I do know my way around the audio-video world. But it’s too in-depth for me. Above all, I don’t (yet) know how to tackle the problem.

        Kind regards

          Thank you for your reply.

So far only an old 19″ TV (Samsung UE19D4020NW) is connected to the output.

The input can be configured on the matrix -> HDCP off, HDCP 1.4 or HDCP 2.2, but changing the setting does nothing. HDCP 2.2 is set by default.

The TV Box works perfectly when connected directly to the TV. I have been using it like this for about 1 year now. But now I’ve remodelled the office a bit and the technology is getting a bit more complex 😁

I have just done the following test. I tested two short HDMI cables (TV box to TV). Then I used these tested cables to connect the box and the display to the matrix. In my opinion, this allows me to rule out the cables. Unfortunately, it didn’t work that way either.

It’s best to take a look at the manual for your HDMI matrix and check what you can set on the device itself with regard to the EDID data.
And you also need to check which HDCP standard your TV/projector etc. supports and then A) all devices in the chain must support HDCP 1.4 or HDCP 2.2.
But as soon as you have hDCP 2.2 from the TV box to the matrix and then HDCP 1.4 from the matrix to the image-producing device, nothing happens, because the HDMI interface of the TV box notices that your matrix is weakening the copy protection from 2.2 to 1.4 and then nothing happens with the image output.
This means that all devices in your chain must support HDCP 2.2 or HDCP 1.4, but not mixed ;-)

Thank you very much for your detailed answer.

Since the thing works when I connect the TV box directly to the TV, I assume that there is an HDCP standard that both support.

Therefore, in my opinion, it can be assumed that the matrix is messing up the settings. The following questions arise for me:

            • how do I find out which HDCP standard is the right one
            • How do I get the matrix to stop messing things up?
            • can I possibly use a newer TV box?

There is quite a lot that can be set in the matrix:

I will probably have to take a closer look at it 🧐

            Best regards
