Why does it now take a very long 81 seconds to start up the TV box with new Android + Google?

I would like to point out that I live in an old wooden house and always switch on all power consumers via a power strip for fire safety reasons, but also for sustainability reasons. Since the recent switch to Android + Google, the start-up time has taken 2-3 times longer, namely a measured 81 seconds. I have just been at my youngest son’s house for 2 weeks and the start-up time with the Teleboy TV provider takes 3 - 4 seconds. How is it possible that a highly paid and therefore responsible SWISSCOM management for TV products overlooks such a disadvantage for us subscribers or perhaps does not even understand the consequences of the Android + Google decision? I am very curious about the community’s experiences in this regard. Side note: with well over 1 million TV boxes, leaving all TV boxes permanently energised is probably not exactly CO2-neutral either!

    hello Wejoyauss13

If you want the box to be ready almost immediately after switching on, you would have to leave the box connected to the power supply and activate sleep mode.
This will also allow updates to be installed and the guide to be updated during the night.

The energy-saving mode is active by default:

    1. Press Home on the remote control
    2. Navigate to the top left on the cogwheel and press OK
    3. Navigate to TV Box at the top and press OK
    4. Select Save energy at the bottom and press OK
    5. Select Sleep mode at the top and press OK
    6. Select the Sleep modes (Recommended) box and activate with OK button
    7. Select Save at the bottom and press OK to save.

It should now be much quicker to switch on.

Without standby, the Swisscom TV box is simply very slow during a cold start, as not only does the operating system have to restart, but a lot of blue TV-specific data from Scratch has to be reloaded from the central servers at the same time.

It’s best to simply switch on the TV box before getting a coffee or beer in the kitchen and then it will still work 🙂

PS: It’s possible that the cold start will be a little faster in the future, as this is still an issue in the TV Box team, but unfortunately there’s probably not much further potential from a technical point of view

GuidoL / Thanks for the prompt reply - my TV box is already set to “sleep mode” - but I don’t want to have any power consumers in my house made of wood and switch everything off with the power strip when I’m away. Once again: well over 1 million TV boxes have to be switched on 24 hours a day, I can’t accept that at the moment and just for comparison: with Teleboy: switch on the power strip and in 3 - 4 seconds the TV reception is on.

Then you have to live with the long startup time and the TV box not always being up to date.
The box has always run Google Android and it takes about as long to start up as it takes to restart your smartphone.

It’s up to you to decide whether it’s worth the hassle and inconvenience.

If you are happy with Teleboy, all is well. Then you could not only save electricity but also money by cancelling your TV contract with Swisscom and returning the box.

You are right, the Teleboy TV app is generally much better performing than blue TV, but this is also due to the fact that it focuses on pure TV, whereas blue TV integrates many different streaming services, many blue’s own additional packages and the entire blue Entertainment VOD sales and rental offer directly into the TV platform, which of course requires a lot of additional information and also hundreds of nice “additional pictures”.

As I am a customer tester of the Swisscom TV boxes and also like to do comparative tests between blue TV and Teleboy TV from time to time, I have subscribed to both services myself and each of the two services has its own advantages and disadvantages depending on individual customer requirements.
What they have in common, however, is that both services provide a good modern TV offering including 7-day replay and recording options.
