Expand WLAN with access point for network camera

  • Hi

To set up network cameras (Eufy), I need to extend the WiFi range.

In addition to the Swisscom Box WLAN, I have already set up a TP-Link access point (connected with an Ethernet cable) on the other side of the house (same network name, same password & encryption)

When I move around the house with my smartphone, it “jumps” nicely from one network to the other and I also have full reception at the planned location of the outdoor camera.

If I now want to set the camera to the outside position, it won’t find the access point and will probably try to find the “main network”. Because this is too far away, no connection is established.

Is there a way to change the AP details so that the camera accepts them or do I have to make a different setting on the Swisscom Box? Or do you see another option.

All Swisscom Box settings were left default, the same applies to the AP

    Thanks for your ideas

    • It could be that the cam has problems with the WPA2/WPA3 encryption standard. Switch the AP to WPA2 only and test8

@Nochappio97 Set up the AP to send out a 2nd SSID and connect the camera to it

This should be possible with any modern AP

You can also try to temporarily turn off the IB WiFi to set it up

If that doesn’t work, it could be that the AP is only sending on 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz with channel 13 or the encryption is on WPA3, all of which can cause problems with IP cams

@WABU Depending on the application, it makes more sense to have the same SSID and PW everywhere then the vast majority of devices can roam between the APs without any problems, there are always a few (mostly IoT devices) that have trouble But you can make a second SSD for this or, if there aren’t that many, simply connect it to the AP you’re currently connecting to, many such devices send so little bandwidth that that is relatively irrelevant

    @NilsL

Since the camera has a fixed location, you can give it a different name and password, and it is also safer if there are different passwords.

When it comes to the WPA setting, you don’t have to change anything on the WLAN boxes and you can leave the latest standard there.

Of course, it’s up to each person how they do it. 😀

@WABU which cameras do you use? Did they automatically connect to the available AP?

As I understand it, with the Eufy Cams there is no way to open an interface to control the individual network.
