Tipps für einen stressfreien Umzug

Tips for a stress-free house move

Have you happily signed your new rental agreement and given notice on your old flat, only to suddenly be filled with worry about the move itself? Don’t panic! These tips will take the stress out of your move.

Before moving

Plan ahead and do the sums

Start your planning early. Draw up a to-do list and a budget. This will help you keep track, stay calm and avoid nasty surprises. Also plan for any additional professional help you might need with dismantling and rebuilding furniture.

Report your move

If you are moving to a new municipality, you will also need to give notice of your departure from your current place of residence. Don’t forget to notify Swisscom of your move in My Swisscom, too. This will enable us to set up the Internet connection, TV and telephone access line at your new address as quickly as possible.

Paying the security deposit

Of course, we’re not going to explain how to pay for a rental guarantee here. But we do have a tip for you: take out Swisscom sure rental guarantee insurance. With this option, you can stay financially flexible and will not need to place any of your hard-earned cash in a security deposit account.

Arrange help

Don’t do it all yourself. Assemble a reliable team of people to help you with the move and cleaning etc. as early as possible. Whether you call in friends, family or professional removal and cleaning companies, every helping hand is worth its weight in gold. Remember that tasty refreshments and the prospect of a thank-you meal are a great motivation.

Pack boxes

Ask around to see if anyone has any spare packing materials and used removals boxes. You’re sure to find something. Sometimes, you can get away with buying very little at all.

Pack with care. Label all boxes clearly with their intended destination (living room, basement, etc.) and flag up any fragile items. Make life easier for those helping you with the move by not overfilling the boxes and sealing them carefully.

After moving

Set up your Internet and TV

It’s easier to sort out your living space with your favourite tunes in the background and the occasional TV break. So don’t delay in getting your Internet access, your speakers and your TV set up.

Are you a bit of a technophobe who would prefer not to have to set up their own router, WLAN repeater and TV-Boxes? No problem! Book a visit from one of our My Service experts. They will be happy to install and configure your devices for you.

Register and change your address

Be sure to register with your local residents’ registration office within 14 days of your move. Notify your employer, health insurance provider and insurer of your new address.

Update your household contents insurance

Speaking of insurance: a house move is the perfect opportunity to switch to a new household insurance – Swisscom sure, for instance. Pay monthly with your Swisscom bill and enjoy the flexibility to make changes at any time.

Time to celebrate

Prepare a thank-you meal for everyone who helped with your move or hold a housewarming party. Toast your new home with friends and family.

The rental deposit insurance thing is rather bad advice.

You move into an apartment:

1. Once into a blocked account CHF 4000.00

2. Every year CHF 160.00 to an insurance company

You move out (without a claim):

1. From that blocked account you will receive the CHF 4,000.00 (possibly plus interest depending on the bank).

2. No payout

You move out (including damage)

1. Depending on the amount, you will receive a partial amount from the blocked account (in the event of a loss: CHF 3,600.00) or you will have to pay a little more (in the event of a loss: CHF 4,400.00).

2. The landlord receives the money from the insurance company and the insurance company then invoices you for the entire Betrag (in this example CHF 3600.00 or CHF 4400.00)

In the event of moving out after 25 years and a claim of CHF 3,600.00 with a rental deposit of CHF 4,000.00:

1. Deposit into blocked account CHF 4000.00 and withdrawal CHF 400.00

2. Transferred CHF 4,000.00 to the insurance company and then transferred another CHF 3,600.00.

That means in the specific example. After 25 years you have either paid CHF 4,000.00 into a blocked account or CHF 4,000.00 to an insurance company. Only the money in the blocked account is still available.

The system with rental deposit insurance corresponds in principle to a small loan with a nominal interest rate of around 4 percent, but unlike a small loan with zero risk for the insurance.

Now you can say 4 percent is quite cheap compared to a small loan, but if you are solvent enough, it is still not worth it because it is higher than the comparable risk-free savings interest rate.
