5G Booster Slow speeds if connected via Switch

  • I have installed the 5G Booster connected directly to the Internet Box in the living room.
In the living room the wifi works with high speeds (180 Mbps), because the laptop connects to the wifi provided by the Internet Box.

But I have a big house, so the InternetBox is connected to a Network-Switch (from Unifi) and other rooms in the house have a wifi access point connect by cable to that Switch.

When my laptop is using the wifi provided by the wifi access points the max speed I achieve is 10Mbps.

This is consistent with all of the wifi extenders (WLAN-Box2) etc…

    • I found the root cause:
The Internet-Box was not properly connected to the Switch, then it somehow connected to one of the WLAN-Box2 via wifi (mesh mode I guess). That WLAN-Box2 was the one providing connection to the rest of the computers connected to the Switch. But for yet another reason, the WLAN-Box2 was connected as a 10Mbps ethernet mode instead of gigabit mode.

So, in the end, it was just a bad connection.
I am just surprised that the InternetBox can connect to the WLAN-Box2 via wifi like in a mesh mode…

Replace the access points with WLAN-Boxes ⅔ (up to 4 additional). Connect everything with cables wherever possible. If you need to use a switch get the Swisscom recommended TP-Link model with Swisscom specific settings.

      Hi @Wegrioscheu44

Please connect your laptop directly to the switch port the access point is plugged into and retest (to make sure it’s not a bad cable)

How many Wi-Fi extenders do you have? How are they connected to each other? Are you using different brands?

Also do a speedtest with your laptop directly connected to the Internetbox via cable and check, if you can reach the speed defined in the checker for your address.

I am currently suspecting an issue within your network, and not with the internetbooster. To check your internetbooster status:

Open internetbox.swisscom.ch and check the following:

Before the login, click on the checkmark next to “Internet Connection” and check your connection status. It should show two modes, on the left your DSL connection, and on the right the connection from the booster to the mobile network (LTE or NR5GNSA):

After logging in, click on “Internet Booster 5G” on the right-hand site and check the signal strength:

(Hopefully, your 5G will be better than mine 😉)

      Hi @Wegrioscheu44

Glad you were able to find the cause!

But for yet another reason, the WLAN-Box2 was connected as a 10Mbps ethernet mode instead of gigabit mode.

Usually, this is a symptom of a bad cable or bad cable termination. I would recommend to check with another cable.

Sorry, I do not know if it right to intervene this way with a question, but I was intrigued about you writing “so the Internet-Box is connected to a Network-Switch ”.

I’ve tried to do the same, but it seems I’m not able to let my Internet Box 3 recognize that the booster is connected: maybe you can help me? A tip?
      Thank you

      Hi @chimai

In case the switch you are using supports vlan tagging, make sure to tag the vlans 699, as well as 700 on the switchport of both the booster and the IB.
